Re: Handset Software Updates - 31/01/2014

Thanks for the new update, Craig.

Any reason why this latest thread omits the 'Other Devices' list, as per your 2014 trend?

The reason I ask is that quite a few of us are keen to learn more concerning the Galaxy S3 variants, and as per your previous thread dated 27/01/14, the Galaxy S3 variants were listed as 'no further updates expected'.

As I recently posted on the 27/01/14 thread, Telstra's main competitor, Optus, lists the devices as receiving another update in February. Any reason why Telstra have chosen to not update these relatively new devices?

-----------------------------------------------

Although it adds little to the debate for this forum, for those interested in the Samsung Galaxy S3 and S3 4G updates, Optus forums have the following to say:

Galaxy S3 3G - (I9300)                   -  Next version: 4.3
Testing will begin shortly after we receive this version from Samsung
                                                           Expected release: February

Galaxy S3 4G - (I9305)                  - Next version: 4.3
Testing will begin shortly after we receive this version from Samsung
                                                          Expected release: February

It could be seen, once again, that the premium retailer that is Telstra have dropped the ball again :\

If I've given an answer that helps, then clicking the little 'kudos' button next to my post helps me :-)

Thanks for the official update, seems there was a post on the 28/1 that claims to be an official update thread, looks very much like one, with different, but not dissimilar info, Confusing Or What!

So that's why I'm not receiving any Update 3 for my HTC 8X. Oh well at least I have installed the developer preview. I can still wait until Feb 17.

Re: Handset Software Updates - 31/01/2014

To update specific questions

the HTC 8X says in final testing, this week though, an update rolled out which brought the phone up to GDR2 OS version, with no firmware. Obviously not final, but clarification, some explanation of why the update is proceeding in this way would be great. It seems unusual, and previously we were told that we were to skip this version on HTC's behalf because of issues.

[ Edited ]

good to see a new update. just one problem. ive got a HTC 8s. ive recived an update for it. im still on GDR1. i tapped download the update and it has a note below that 114MB is required for the update. so i clean up some of the things i dont need, and now i have 401.5MB free (from 150MB). around 80% of "preparing to install",  a message pops up and says low on storage etc, so close that. gets to 70% of the pre-installatoin, then goes to the same screen i started with, (114MB is required) keeps going in circles and gets no further.

what can i do?

edit: it doesnt say what the update is> not sure is some firmware update, or GDR3 itself. just has "download"

@pedah, given that the post your referring to was posted by an occasional contributor I would say it has been posted as a tongue in cheek effort for people to have a laugh rather than a genuine update. To be honest I'm surprised one of the mods have not deleted it by now.

I would only pay attention to posts by either CraigR and Yannick when it comes to device updates.

Re: Handset Software Updates - 31/01/2014

Well, my S4 got the 4.3 in December. Can't say I've noticed any difference to be frank, but I use the Nova launcher, so my skin remains the same. I did have mms issues, but they turned out to be telstra forgetting to enable mms on my (new) number!!

Re: Handset Software Updates - 31/01/2014

Finally, 4.3 is coming to the Galaxy Nexus just in time for my contract to expire :smileytongue: (been running it for a good few months now, really is worth the wait but such a shame the wait is sooooo long for people patiently waiting for the official Telstra approved build). What is more alarming is that the phone I plan to upgrade too (the S4, wanted the S5 but contract about to expire and can't be bothered messing around and waiting for its official release) is still stuck on 4.2 as well. Considering Samsung are preping 4.4 for the S4, was hoping it at least had 4.3 on it.

Just out of curiocity, how the situation with the Nexus 5? I'm only slightly interested in it mainly because of getting badly burnt on the Galaxy Nexus and also because want a change (pure Google is great but I actually like some of the valued added stuff the OEMs add in). Do the updates still need to come through Telstra like on the Galaxy Nexus? or do they come straight from Google this time?

I was expecting to see some sort of update regarding the WP7.8 update for the HTC Titan as it's been shown on and off that the update hasn't been going through for a while now.

EDIT: Also good to see that Lumia Black for the 920 has been approved. Now we just need to wait for someone at MS/Telstra to press the big red "DEPLOY" button.

@Xerxes, apparently Telstra have left the nexus 5 alone this time, it runs standard google firmware and the updates will come direct from google when available.

Re: Handset Software Updates - 31/01/2014

Hi

Just completed the 4.3 update on my Note 2, and it no longer works. Constantly getting messages that various services are not responding, the screen is not able to sense touch. I can't send text messages and no matter what I do the whole phone freezes after 10 or so minutes...

Is there something happening about this or a fix about to come out? Or am I better off restoring to factory settings. I am pretty annoyed as I have customers waiting on reponses via text and I can't. Not to mention I am unable to use any other functions.

Hi Kailey47,

That isn't good to hear. I've just gone ahead and updated our test Note II handset here and I'm not having the same problems as you're describing there. So I'd suggest factory resetting the handset. Please be aware that this will wipe the handset completely and you'll need to backup if required.

My guess is that is Telstra's way of telling us to get stuffed and to buy a new, overpriced phone from them, just for them to then drop suport for that one once it hits a year or so old. I wonder how I can get hold of the I9305 firmware from Optus since it is quite clear that Telstra doesn't give a flying monkeys left dangler about any phone that is not the newest one.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 phone Model GT-19305T. I require Android 4.3 OS to run my new Bleutooth heart rate monitor in conjunction with the other Map my ride software.

Can you please advise when 4.3 would be available for the GT19305T? You would make my cardiologist very happy.

Hey H-E-P,

Firstly, welcome to CrowdSupport. Please stick around and offer any expertise you have in the range of topics we have here, in our Community.

H-E-P. As per previous post by Craig in mid-January, we currently don't have any information on when your handset update will become available. Feel free though to check threads in this forum for any updates regarding this. Thanks H-E-P.

With kind regards,

You don't want it yet, trust me.

It breaks compatibility with many accessories - woops - Samsung reckon they will fix it in their next go at making TouchWiz compatible with KitKat (Android 4.4)

Telstra should wait until it's stable, especially given that they sold thousands of Galaxy Gear watches with Note 3's.

Alas, it looks like Telstra is abandoning support for the GS3? Very dissappointing. I'm sorry to say this but you may lose a customer once the contract is up.

The lack of Telstra support for the 4G version of SG3  will be formost in my mind at contract expiration time.

In telstras defense (strange for me I know) Samsung havent even released the unbranded aussie firmware, which telstras version is no doubt based on, so it could be a while.

Re: Handset Software Updates - 31/01/2014

The fault can be attributed to both Telstra & Samsung. Telstra doesn't have enough support staff to cover all the phones that it offers. Samsung has too many models and allows too much Telco specific customisation. When my contract expires I plan to separately replace my GT-I9305T with a stock Android phone that is not customised. Whether I continue with Telstra or switch to Vodafone or Optus will depend upon the BYO phone plans that are available at the time.

Re: Handset Software Updates - 31/01/2014

My plans are similar to Elegy above. My next phone is likely to be BYO  and purchased from who ever is offering the best deal but Telstra has consistently  lagged behind the other carriers as far as device updates and I am left with the feeling that as a customer I am being treated with contempt so I am more likely to change carriers than I am to stay with Telstra..

So, this update's ETA has been pushed back twice so far and if it fails to release by midnight tonight that will be the 3rd time the ETA has in fact changed.

Although I understand that patience is a virtue, this is a tad ridiculous.

I trust our friends at Telstra won't keep us in the dark regarding the true release date?

I don't mind waiting for FW updates, if they take their time to get it right - but just tell us honestly when it's due.

So far the release dates for FW seems to be a vague guesstimate, at best. If it's coming out tomorrow, tell me. If it's coming out in a month, tell me - I don't care.

But enough with changing release dates and information 3, 4 , 5 times. That's what bugs me.

Called technical support and found out they have no idea about what Android 4.3 or 4.2 is. For once the guy on the phone bluffed saying i need to call google to ask them the release dates. Later again changed saying a bug was found and so it had been found. I am an IT student, so they can try ad much as they want to, but you cant. Also you need to train your outsourced staffs properly. This is ridiculous, imagine if it was an old lady or man, the guy would have given them totally wrong information and they would habe believed it.

But so did you - but since you're a student, that can be forgiven.

According to Telstra's own updates, it was Approved days ago. Approved means no bugs (or ready to go to market as is, even if there's bugs). Crowd support is here for a reason, but even if there's technical people here, we shouldn't be fed lies anyways.

Which I think, is the point of using third party first level support. Sigh.

Black/GDR3 definitely rolling out for the 920 (got the notification yesterday morning, loaded last night).  Completely underwhelming update. Not worth the fuss everyone was making. Played around with it last night and couldn't find anyhting that would make much of a difference to my day to day use of the phone other than the notifications on the glance screen are better.

Telstra approved the Sony Xperia update for 4.3.  Sony pulled it because of issues elsewhere around the world.  They are apparently going to skip 4.3 now and go to 4.4.2 (if you're lucky - the jump from 4.1.2 to 4.3 on my Galaxy S3 made a world of difference - yes, I rooted it).
