Whilst I am disappointed that it is taking so long for Android 4.3 to be delivered to the GT-I9300T, I have to congratulate Telstra on knocking back the rubbish firmware Samsung has served up.

I have been running the international UK version of Android 4.3 firmware (BTU) for more than three month and it's performance is less than impressive. Worst aspect is that has a lot of lag.

I find it interesting that you have had a lot of lag. I've been running the german firmware for a while now with positive results. everything is quicker, cleaner, smoother. not a big fan of Knox though, as I'd like to root and inroot without removing warranty...

I see that KitKat has been announce for the S3 and the S4 in the US and yet you guys are still pissing around with testing the 4.3 update.  How many weeks away is it for i9300 and how many months for the i9305? Will it be out before the KitKat update haas completed it's rollout?

Great timing, Telstra!

Re: Handset Software Updates - 6/03/2014

I think you possibly misread the post by Craig. It states that TELSTRA are still awaiting a submission for the model i9305. That submission has to come from Samsung, so to slam Telstra for something that is Samsungs glitch is a bit rich.

I'd also point out something you may be unaware of and that is that the release overseas has been stop go stop go, as there were a number of problems with the update that had to be adressed.

If I have provided an answer, or posed a question that helps or interests you, your KUDOS vote would be appreciated.
If I or anyone has provided a solution, you'll help others if you mark our answer as the Solution.

Sorry, Telstra, but your support for Blackberry has been appalling. Your automatic handset update website which covered all pre-Z10 handsets does not even list the Z10 or Q10, your phone support is cumbersome and your delay now of more than two months in providing this important update as compared to your overseas and Australian competitors is far too slow. Can't wait for my contract to end!

WOW!
I may be able to use my Galaxy Gear yet with I9305 GS3 update, which the telstra shop guy said at the time would be available in December.
Thx telstra for helping me to buy a very expensive paperweight. I may be able to actually use it as a watch soon?
Will have to blow the dust off the thing as it has been sitting on the shelf for over 3 months.

Hi there Billy

If it helps, many Telstra subscribers have used the method of purchasing a $2 Vodafone or Optus SIM to get the update.

You simply replace the Telstra SIM with the other without actually registering it etc, and look for the software update - presto!

It's a palaver, but ultimately worth it.

Note, I did about five hard re-sets (battery out) during the first week while it settled, but all good now; Android apps loading, the Hub is even better, battery life for me has added about 6 hours (18 hours before a full charge required) and a few other cute bits and pieces.

Note, the next Telstra upgrade may well miss this one and skip to the next 10.2.2141 which does have a couple of bug fixes apparently.

Good luck!

I think you incorrectly posted the year as 2013.. It should be 06/03/2014 right? Do you have a timeline on the Galaxy S4 mini 4.3 MR?

This will get you absolutely nowhere.

Device updates do not depend on the network you are on, but the CSC, AP, and CP parts of the firmware.

Sorry Electrotune, but it does work and I am first hand proof of that. Crackberry and some other threads of this Crowd Support site also feature comments by people who have done it themselves and i am yet to see anyone who has had an issue (Although that may exist).

Hi there

Assuming it is a android app then yes it will.

Best check with Crackberry or Blackberry sites as to the best way to start using Android Aps. Some are native Blackberry now, some still not.

Can I ask though, will the 4.4 update be released on schedule? Or will it be plagued by delays (and an eventual cancellation) like the 4.3 update???

Re: Handset Software Updates - 6/03/2014

Sony updates for these handsets that were released overseas have drawn a lot of critisism. There have been a range of complaints including the handsets for some users is it overheating according to AndroidSaS, but there is a growing thread over on the Sony Support pages that have a number of problems being reported.

Other things oinclude poor Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections as well as poor images taken with the camera that only got worse since the Android 4.3 update.

+2 According to an article in "gottabemobile" the 4.4 update for the Note 3 is "pushing out across the globe at a blistering pace"

They also note that "American carriers aren’t the only ones that have yet to confirm updates. Carriers in Australia, including Telstra and Vodafone, have yet to confirm Galaxy Note 3 or Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat updates. However, with Samsung’s big push underway, it should only be a matter of time before all of these updates arrive at the surface."

3 of amierica's national carriers have pushed out updates (sprint, us cellular & t-mobile), the other 2 haven't.

Here's a review of the actual update though, if you're interested:

"Telstra resource constraints have delayed the testing of this update".

The Blackberry Q10 update has now been delayed from early March to mid April. Telstra are already one of the last few telcos worldwide to release this update - this is absolutely pathetic.

Re: Handset Software Updates - 6/03/2014

I did the 4.3 update last night via kies (i9506 S4 Cat4)

Since, my wifi will not turn on. And when I reboot it says "Secure Fail ; kernel"??

Anyone else got this. I tried reflashing, and same thing. (using "firmware upgrade and initialision" in kies)

Hopefully its not just me..

Re: Handset Software Updates - 6/03/2014

Well hopefully its just a minor glitch in the posted firmware, and they get a new 'correct' one up there pronto.

No WIFI is a bummer .

I've had it running all day, everything else appears ok. I have recieved a couple of phone calls. emails etc. So, I think its mostly ok, for a couple of days.. Anything longer, and I'll call Telstra and complain.

I hope so too. I'm hoping this firmware was released by accident and a fixed one is coming soon. However, if this is in fact the correct firmware then I'll be very unhappy. Breaking my perfectly working phone is not cool.

EDIT: My sister's S4 Cat4 updated without a hitch and is working fine. WiFi works and no "secure" error on boot. It's starting to seem like this might of been a "small glitch" that got past the testing.. wonder how everyone else went with their update? I should note, that I updated via Kies and it broke my phone but my sister updated via the phone directly and it works fine. Maybe the problem is Kies?

I just went to try a manual check for updates from phone. and it says:

"Your phone has been modified. Software updates are not available"

Whereas kies, just shows current firmware is equal to latest firmware. No errors. no problems.

Maybe I should try forced downgrade, then OTA update... If this is an option somewhere

Re: Handset Software Updates - 6/03/2014

Hi Barry,

Have you tried backing up to Kies, then restoring the phone to factory settings? Once restored to factory, see if the issue remains. Then selectively restore your data.. it could be that Kies has backed up some redundant data.

You usually don't need to do a full Kies backup if you (a) Store your data on an external micro SD. (b) Sync all your email, data, apps to the cloud.

Re: Handset Software Updates - 6/03/2014

[ Edited ]

Alright, my S4 Cat4 is all backed up best I can. Set Kies to factory reset the phone and reflash the latest firmware for the phone and see how that works. If that fails again, I've downloaded the official Telstra 4.2.2 ROM for the phone and will (try) to flash it back to that and either update to 4.3 OTA (NOT by Kies) or just leave it on 4.2.2. Another thing I have noticed with this borked update is the phone now thinks it's running custom (non-official) firmware...which is odd and probably why the software update doesn't work and the reason for the error message at boot. The WiFi problem appears to be known bug with 4.3 and not related to the other problems. Hopefully a complete format and restore will fix that.

EDIT: Should also note my phone can no longer identify itself as a Telstra phone. If I try to access anything that requires the phone to be checked that it is Telstra, that check fails and get an error message saying it's not a Telstra phone. I cannot beleive this update was allowed to be released! it should of at least been delayed or sent back to Samsung to be fixed in my opinion.

UPDATE: That failed pretty badly, seems the firmware downloaded from Kies is NOT an official Samsung/Telstra ROM (well far as my phone is concerned anyway). Attempting to flash 4.2.2 back onto the phone and will try OTA update to 4.3 (using Odin and ROM from SamMobile) since I am flashing an official ROM and not a custom ROM, shouldn't have any troubles (I hope). My phone is not rooted or interfered with in anyway, just using means provided by the phone as is. Fingers crosses...

UPDATE 2: That failed too :-( seems Telstra's firmware has tripped the custom firmware trigger and now the phone is locked down and unable to recieve official updates anymore. Once this happens it cannot (easily) be undone. Due to this being an obscure model finding the right tools to fix this mess Telstra created very diffcult AND it voids the warranty so can't take it back to Telstra to get it fixed even though THEY broke it. Thanks Telstra, you broke my phone :-(

DO NOT UPDATE YOUR S4 CAT4 TO 4.3 VIA KIES, IT WILL VOID YOUR WARANTY AND BREAK YOUR PHONE. YOU CAN TRY UPDATED DIRECTLY FROM THE PHONE, AS IT HAS WORKED FOR SOME PEOPLE, BUT DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Thanks for the updates.

There are three people here in an official Telstra forum with the same issue, surely there are heaps more.

Mine is also totally untouched in any way. Not only that, I bought it about a week and a half ago.

I hope its doesn't turn into some stupid send it back for repairs thing.

Re: Handset Software Updates - 6/03/2014

Hi Xerxes,

The update hasn't been released by Telstra yet.

The Android Jellybean+ 4.3 update for the Samsung Galaxy S4 with Cat 4 is currently in testing & looks to be released on 24th of this month.

We do this to ensure it works correctly with the network. If an issue is found, we then work with Samsung & then test again until it's ready to be released.

We do this to ensure it works correctly with the network. If an issue is found, we then work with Samsung & then test again until it's ready to be released.

Thanks for the reply, however, whether it was intended or not the update WAS released (but seems to of been pulled now) and anyone who downloaded it via Kies risks having their phone broken. However, my sister updated her S4 Cat4 to 4.3 OTA and the phone is working fine, no errors and no issues.

Re: Handset Software Updates - 6/03/2014

Hi Xerxes,

If you've rooted your phone, this not an official release of the software & can void your warranty.

Doing this isn't recommended by Telstra as we do testing first to make sure it works correctly with the network.
