Setting up mobile internet on your Next G™ Telstra mobile......

[ Edited ]

Even with all the available technology at our fingertips it can still be a little confusing trying to do the simplest of things.... such as setting up mobile internet on your Next G™ Telstra mobile.

Steps can vary depending on the type of handset you have, and whether it was originally supplied through Telstra or purchased via a third party.

So we hope these steps will help you get connected:

Step 1.     First, see if there’s a BigPond button, soft key or app on your mobile. If there is, press it and you should be online.

Step 2.     If you don’t have a BigPond button, go to your phone’s main menu and select ‘Web’ or ‘Internet’ (or the equivalent option).

Step 3.     If neither of those options work, your mobile may need to be configured for internet access. The easiest way to do that is to visit our Mobile Phone Set-up website and follow the steps there.

                                                set up mobile.PNG

This will let us send the right mobile internet settings to your phone and help you set up your access.

Step 4.     If the mobile phone set-up site doesn't work for your phone, you may have to enter the appropriate settings manually, so to do this please select the type of mobile you have from the below list:

this must be way out of date, you haven't been able to view the APN field on the iPhone for about 18 months or more, any up to date firmware version won't allow this

the appropriate thing to do with an iPhone is to make sure the cellular provider settings are up to date (connect to iTunes and check for updates) and if it still doesn't work go to Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings, this will reload the correct carrier bundle according to the SIM in the phone

This may change once version 5.x of iOS is released as Apple state that everything will be able to be done without a PC so the carrier updates should be able to happen over the air by then so connecting to the PC probably won't be necessary soon, the reset procedure is likely to still be the same though

get anyone in your office to check their iPhone and you'll see the APN field is not visible, I'm guessing nobody has looked at that FAQ page in quite a while or they probably would have changed it long ago :smileyhappy:

Re: Setting up mobile internet on your Next G™ Telstra mobile......

Faster than a speeding bullet, well not quite, however we've had the iPhone FAQ page updated to reflect the below:

If your iPhone is new, to connect to the Internet, simply use any application which uses Internet access (ie touch the Safari icon) and you'll connect automatically.

You can tell iPhone is connected to the Internet over a cellular data network if you see either of these symbols Imagein the status bar at the top of the iPhone screen.

If you have bought an unlocked handset from another network, please follow the steps below:

Step 1 of 6: Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and running before attempting to update.
Step 2: Connect your device to your computer.
Step 3: Select your iPhone, touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
Step 4: Select the Summary tab.
Step 5: Select the Restore option.
Step 6: When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up option.

If this doesn't fix the problem, you can set up mobile internet via phone:

Step 1 of 6: Phone 125 111. We recommend calling from another phone, so you can use your mobile while you speak to us.
Step 2 of 6: When asked what your call is about, say "wireless data".
Step 3 of 6: When asked if your call is about wireless data or MMS, say "yes".
Step 4 of 6: When asked if you're already using wireless data on your phone, say "no".
Step 5 of 6: When prompted, say "connect".
Step 6 of 6: When prompted, enter your mobile phone number and follow the prompts.

Apple is a trade mark of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G are trademarks of Apple Inc.

So thanks again for pointing out the outdated information Jokiin!!
