My question is how much to Telstra charge to use 130000 numbers???
My understanding is that 1800 numbers are Free and 13/1300 numbers cost the same as a local call (although may not be classified as such in caps and freebies and stuff).
I did hear rumblings about 1300/13 being made Free like 1800 but I'm not sure if it ever happened.

Telestra what a rip off, exercising monopoly power. Why 1300 is not part of any plans. How come your peers can do better than you on this.
Optus provides 1300 part of the bundle so does even TGP who uses Telstra line.....Optus is not my area otherwise I dont give **bleep** about going with Telestra, I dont have a choice.........Booo Telstra Booo I dont recommend Telestra to anyone....

Yeah Hi there,
I was told by a testra operator that a 1300 number is free as long as that number is associated with telstra. But the problem is that, when you dial the 1300 number, you dont know if it is associated with telstra or not. So where can I find a list that tells me which 1300 numbers are associated with telstra or not???????
Its NOT right that telstra advertises that these numbers are a local call and thus should be free under a telstra plan, when they are not. If you look at most phone numbers you call on your land line phone, it is to utilitie companies, or banks or phone companies and so on. Most of these calls make up about 70% of your bills.
Now if I want to cancel my contract with telstra, I have to pay $320.00.
What a joke!!!!
What is the telco ombudsman doing about this problem, I bet you not much, money in the back pocket!!!!!!!!

Whalst Tel$tra MIS-management would never admit the fact, I firmly believe the reason why 13whatever numbers were introduced was to trap users of VOIP phone systems into paying Tel$tra style extortionate costs for their calls. As far as I'm aware, every 13whatever number is merely an alias for a 'PROPER' phone number (ie one with an area code) but the typical brein-dead counter jumper found in the likes of Hardly Normal or public DIS-service lacks the plurality of functional grey cells necessary to comprehend something so technical as an 'aliased phone number' so they usually respond ' the 13whatever number is the only one we have. A lot of the time one can find a workaround for this crap by locating the ' phone number for INTERNATIONAL calls' ... even most gubmunt departments often have one albeit tucked well away from prying eyes on some near impossible to find webpage.

Actually, 1300 numbers were conceived in the 1997 Numbering Plan when we moved to 10 digit dialing (from memory), which is long before VOIP hit the mainstream scene.
Its idea was to provide a consistent, national number for you to call. Great example is Dominos, when you ring their 13x number, you get connected to the store nearest to you (assuming landline here).

13/18 numbers can also be routed to Overseas numbers, and to different numbers based on location (using the Dominos Example, I can call the same number and be connected to the Dominos in either store.
This can also be the same for some companies. For example, it might be better to have a DDI in Perth for Perth customers, and trunk that call to your office in Sydney via your own IP network, which makes it cheaper for the business to supply a 13 number instead of the main office number.

I'm aware of the technical ins and outs of 13whatever numbers however at least a few users have the nous to also supply 'real' phone numbers. Dominos is a good example ... whilst the company is a LONG way from the best pizza manufacturer and has one of the worst online ordering sites on planet earth, one can at least phone the local branch (or any other for that matter) in full knowledge where the call will be answered.

True, but more people will remember 13 22 00 over 02 9242 0570....
It's all about simplicity. 13 numbers weren't, as you say, designed to rip of VOIP customers, as 13 existed well before VOIP.

Do they? I thought they were advertised as being the COST of a local call. Actually, these days, they're a few cents more.
