App permissions for Telstra 24x7 Android App explained

We have noticed a number of users are concerned about some of the permissions requested by the Telstra 24x7 Android app. 

 

We try to keep these permissions to a minimum and would like to explain how these permissions are used within the application.

Photos/Media/Files

Read, Modify or delete the contents of your USB storage

This is required by the Google maps API used within the app for the “Find a store” functionality

 

Location

Approximate location (network-based), precise location (GPS and network based)

This is required by the "Find a store" functionality to provide you directions and distance from your current location. 

 

Messaging

receive text messages (For Telstra ID + Rollout customers only)

This is used to send a verification to your mobile phone number via a sms to ensure we link the right profile to your Telstra ID+

 

Others

Full network access

This is required to download data from our network to ensure your app is up to date as possible.

 

Prevent phone from sleeping

This is required by the home screen widget which will update automatically in the background.

 

Run at Startup

Required by the home screen widget to update when phone starts.

 

Retrieve Data from the Internet (For Telstra ID+ Rollout customers only)

Information from our records is sent to your Telstra 24x7 App via the internet to keep you informed about your services

 

View network connections

Required to determine if you are using a mobile network or Wifi to deliver the appropriate experience.

 

Read Google service configuration

This is required by the Google maps API used within the app for the “Find a store” functionality

 

Your social information (older versions)

Read your contacts

This is required by the “Rename your service” function.  The app will read your contacts and suggest an appropriate service nickname if that service number is found in your contacts.
