ETC Home Broadband Plans

Answered
I am trying to work out what the Early Termination charge is for the latest home broadband plans.

My situation is that the last time I signed to a plan to avoid ETC's, I was hit with:

T-Gateway™ Installation Kit $168.00
Activation Fee $89.00
Professional Installation $240.00

The professional install fee I questioned, as when ordering I was told if the kit was mailed out, and no technician visit was required (which was the case) that charge wouldn't apply. As it worked out when querying the charge, the tech may not visit your place, and you still pay the charge.

So being caught out once before, I'll assume that charge is normal, even if your modem gets posted out...

However, the new plans seem to indicate the casual connect charge is now only $240 (versus $497 last time), including the modem (is this outright or rented/leased?), and no professional installation fee, and also includes the activation fee:

Phone and Home Broadband connection charge:

For new Telstra Home Phone or Home Broadband customers: $99 on a 24-month contract or $240 on a casual plan (includes a Telstra Wi-Fi Modem).  Standard Professional Installation is included at no extra cost if we determine it is mandatory at your premises.

So it looks like a casual connection is now a lot less, but is there a catch? Prices rarely go down from my experience.

But back to my original question, how is the ETC charge calculated exactly. Will I be better off by signing to a plan, and paying the $89 charge without fearing another $240 professional installation charge?

If I sign to a 24-month plan and cancel after 12 months, what will the ETC be? There is no explanation on the CIS, only a Maximum Early Termination Charges (ETC) estimation.

How is this fee calculated?

Re: ETC Home Broadband Plans

Hi Geo101,

Thanks for reaching out re your contract, I'm sorry there's been some confusion with the charges.

You can find the details of each plan online here http://tel.st/7nvj8;

I was of the belief that the break fee was charged at $15 for each month left on the contract. More on cancellation fees here http://tel.st/spx4n

You'll find a list of the connection fees here http://tel.st/uwz87

Get back to me if I can help further.

This is all this says (doesn't mention any amounts in regards to my question)

If I cancel my bundle early, what are the termination fees?

There is an Early Termination Charge if you cancel your Telstra bundle within the minimum term.

=>>Yes. But what is this?

If you cancel within the first three months, you’ll also incur a $100 temporary connection fee for the home phone part of your bundle.

=>OK. So does this apply if you select the casual bundle?

If your bundle included hardware like a Telstra TV or a Telstra modem as part of your contract and you cancel the bundle early, then we will add the remaining amount for these items to your total Early Termination Charges (ETC).

=>>What exactly? Add the whole amount or x/24 months of the amount.

If you cancel your bundle and there are any additional Hardware Repayment Options associated with it, you'll need to pay the remaining hardware payments.

=>> Again, how are these calculated?

Any associated bundle benefits, such as Family Calls Benefit, will also be removed.

=>> What does this even mean?

OK, so back to my original question, are these charges extra to the charges here.

The standard phone line connection charges are in addition to the bundle connection charges, is that correct?

Re: ETC Home Broadband Plans

Let me try & clarify all of your points, please bear in mind that we don't have access to accounts to give you the facts & that is why I can only comment in general as such.

There are connection fees & there are monthly fees.

You will pay an extra $120 in connection fees if you go with the non-contract plan.

The $100 charge for cancelling a phone service before 3 months is on top of all other cancellation fees.

If you cancel your service while in contract you will be charges the plan break fee ( $15 for each month left, so with 12 months left it would be $180) plus the balance of any equipment you are paying off, so lets say you are paying $30 a month for extras, lets say it's a phone, the phone is yours to keep so if you've only paid off half of what you were meant to pay you'll be charged the other half as part of the break fee.

In regards to 'bundle benefits', lets say as part of your bundle you're getting $10 off your mobile plan each month, then you cancel your bundle, on that day the $10 off would stop.

If you have an existing bundle & you contact the billing team they can actually give you a sum.
