Why are we doing this?

Based on feedback from our customers, we know that you:

  • Love our mobile network when you are on the move;
  • Love Wi-Fi from your fixed broadband connection; and
  • You want to make the most out of your fixed broadband plan  

So after listening to the feedback we decided to broaden your choice of connection out of the home by working towards creating Australia’s largest Wi-Fi network.

How secure is a Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot?

A Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot is open and public. You can start a session on the network without credentials, simply by accepting the terms and conditions. We recommend that you don’t send or receive personal information or carry out activities like internet banking when using unsecured public Wi-Fi. And make sure you disconnect from the wireless network after using it.


Is it safe to use a Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot for sending or receiving personal information?

For safety’s sake it’s best to use encrypted networks that require you to log in with a password when sharing personal information. When you connect to a Wi-Fi network many devices will prompt you to enter a network type (‘home’, ‘work’ or ‘public’). Always connect as ‘public’ when you connect to a public Wi-Fi network as this will lock down the connection more securely. Don’t send or receive personal information or carry out activities like internet banking when using unsecured public Wi-Fi. And make sure you disconnect from the wireless network after using it.

Will any of my data allowance be used when accessing a Telstra Wi-Fi™ Hotspot?

No. When accessing a Telstra Wi-Fi trial hotspot you can enjoy 30 minutes of free Wi-Fi on us! Always ensure that your phone displays the Wi-Fi symbol when accessing the Hotspot and, if you would like an added precaution to avoid using mobile data if you drop out of Wi-Fi range, you can disable mobile data in your phone’s settings.


What are the speeds like when connected to a Telstra Wi-Fi™ Hotspot?

Given this is a trial service, speeds on the service may vary.  We expect that customers will be able to undertake activities such as sending emails, uploading photos and browsing the net. Please keep in mind that your experience on a Hotspot can be impacted several factors, such as, number of users, distance from Hotspot and the surrounding environment.


Can I access a Telstra Wi-Fi™ Hotspot if I’m not a Telstra customer?

Throughout the trial irrespective of whether you are a Telstra customer or not you can access Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspots, as long as you have a Wi-Fi enabled device. 


What do I need to access a Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot?

To access a Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot you must:

  1. Have a Wi-Fi enabled device
  2. Be in range of a Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot
  3. Connect to the Free_Telstra_WiFi network name
  4. Accept the Terms and Conditions to commence your session

How long can I use a Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot for?

For the duration of our Telstra Wi-Fi trial, you can enjoy free 30 minute Wi-Fi trials at specially marked payphone sites.


How do I find a Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot?


You can find a Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot with the Telstra 24x7 App.  On your iPhone go to  "Find a Store” or on Android devices go to “Find Us” within the app menu and we’ll show you where the closest hotspot is to your location.


Alternatively use the Wi-Fi Hotspot Locator. Given this is a trial service the Wi-Fi Hotspots may not always be available. 


Why do I have to accept Terms and Conditions to use a Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot?

You must accept our Terms and Conditions to access a Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot as they outline the usage restrictions and rules associated with the service.


What information are you recording as part of the trial?

We will collect and store the IP and MAC address of the device that has accessed the Wi-Fi service and non-personal information about your use of the Wi-Fi service. We will use this information for monitoring our service so that we can improve it.


How long is the Telstra Wi-Fi™ Trial running for?

The Free Wi-Fi Trial will end on 14 June 2015. After this date, the network will not be available for a short period while we upgrade it for our full launch. Until then you can still take part by connecting to your nearest hotspot for 30 minutes of free Telstra Wi-Fi on us.

I entered my post code into the Wi-Fi Hotspot Locator and no Hotspots appeared. Why is this?

Unfortunately we do not have Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspots available in all locations across Australia. You can find a Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot at


I was using a Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot earlier today and my speeds were extremely slow. Why is this?

Only a select amount of bandwidth is available at each Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot. Despite our efforts to ensure an acceptable customer experience, depending on the time of day, and number of users accessing the Hotspot your speeds may vary. We apologise for any inconvenience but greatly appreciate your assistance in testing our network.


When I try to connect to the Free_Telstra_WiFi wireless network I’m told “SORRY THIS HOTSPOT IS FULL, just wait a little while and try again?”

The message you have received indicates that the Hotspot you are trying to connect to is currently full. Each Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot has a maximum number of users that can connect at anytime. By setting a maximum number of users per Hotspot this helps to ensure an acceptable experience when using the network.


I was connected to a Telstra Wi-Fi Hotspot and then received a message saying “THANKS FOR HELPING US TEST THE TECHNOLOGY’”. Why have I received this message?

You have received this message as you have reached the end of your FREE session. When connecting to a Telstra Wi-Fi™ Hotspot your session will expire after 30 minutes. This is to ensure that as many individuals as possible are given the opportunity to test the technology.


What is the range like on a Telstra Wi-Fi™ Hotspot?

Due to varying environmental conditions, we recommend remaining within 20 to 50 metres of the Wi-Fi Hotspot. A better connection experience is achieved by maintaining visibility of the Wi-Fi Hotspot at all times

Who are FON?

Fon is a global Hotspot provider and they have worked with many of our global peers to deploy Wi-Fi services in a number of countries.


How does our Wi-Fi Nation vision involve FON?

Telstra is partnering with Fon to offer the Telstra Wi-Fi™ service to consumer and small business customers. Fon assists us with technology in our gateways (modems) that will allow customers to share a small portion of their bandwidth with other Telstra Wi-Fi customers in exchange for accessing their home broadband allowance at Telstra Hotspots across the nation. 


Who else has partnered with FON?

Fon has partnered with some of the largest global telcos including BT, Deutsche Telekom and SFR in France.    

How does FON work?

Fon provides unique gateway technology that broadcasts two dedicated Wi-Fi signals – one for the home user and one that can be accessed by community members and non-community members who buy a pass from Fon. 


When will the Telstra and FON Wi-Fi Network launch?

The Telstra Wi-Fi network will launch this year (2015).
