DNS problems??

Just wondering if there is an issue with the Telstra Business Broadband DNS Servers. Our company website at www.silvercityminerals.com.au redirects to some real estate company in Jindabyne. This only seems to happen from our office connection with Telstra. If I connect via 3G with my phone, Bigpond Mobile or Internode I get the correct page.

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Re: DNS problems??

Have you contacted Telstra Business Broadband Faults and Technical Support,  They might be able to help out with your issue.  The number is 1800 066 594.  When you contact them make sure you have your Internet Full National Number or FNN ready.  It will look like this N1234567R and is called an NR number.

For interest's sake, what is the IP address of the DNS server you are using?

DNS not resolving an address

I am getting multiple reports from people that the address st-proxy.dst.ibm.com is not being found by the DNS at Telstra.  The real server name resolves, but the alias does not.  The real address is lexdcy1224.ecloud.bcsdc.lexington.ibm.com.  Can you verify this and resolve it if it is an issue on your end?

Re: DNS not resolving an address

and just ran NSLOOKUP on the TID DNS server:

Bens-MacBook-Pro:~ ben$ nslookup
> server 203.50.2.71
Default server: 203.50.2.71
Address: 203.50.2.71#53
> st-proxy.dst.ibm.com
Server: 203.50.2.71
Address: 203.50.2.71#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: st-proxy.dst.ibm.com
Address: 12.139.40.161
> lexdcy1224.ecloud.bcsdc.lexington.ibm.com
Server: 203.50.2.71

Address: 203.50.2.71#53

** server can't find lexdcy1224.ecloud.bcsdc.lexington.ibm.com: NXDOMAIN

When I compare that to 8.8.8.8

> server 8.8.8.8
Default server: 8.8.8.8
Address: 8.8.8.8#53
> st-proxy.dst.ibm.com
Server: 8.8.8.8
Address: 8.8.8.8#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: st-proxy.dst.ibm.com
Address: 12.139.40.161
> lexdcy1224.ecloud.bcsdc.lexington.ibm.com
Server: 8.8.8.8
Address: 8.8.8.8#53

** server can't find lexdcy1224.ecloud.bcsdc.lexington.ibm.com: NXDOMAIN

The 2nd Domain doesn't exist Smiley Sad

Ben, that's a traceroute. It has very little top do with DNS. The one bit of that output that could be interesting is the two or three lines that come before that. What IP address destination did it map to? Once it's taken the name and found an IP address, DNS is out of the story (other than making the output look pretty).

Other way around. st-proxy IS resolving directory to an IP address. It's the lexdcy1224 which isn't resolving.

And which DNS are they using? Ben has tried with the TID DNS Servers and Google. I'm using a standard BigPond one I think (it calls itself uneeda.telstra.net) on a TID link. And I just tried using Linode's DNS.

Pretty consclusively that means it's not a Telstra problem. It's either an IBM problem or a user problem. If the st-proxy address resolves, why does anybody need the actual machine address (other than the person responsible for maintaining it)?

Re: DNS not resolving an address

This has all been very interesting.  Maybe it is not a telstra or IBM issue, but the machine(s) themselves with firewalls blocking something.  If you go to this URL:  http://www.ibm.com/connect/ibm/us/en/resources/scottjm/ do you see a "Text/Video Chat" link appear in the right column under "I'm here to help" and if you do, when you press it, do you get a box to start a chat and if you put in a name, do you get a chat started (I may not be around to answer).?

I am currently on an iiNet connection, and I can confirm that I don't even see the Text/Video Chat icon.

Nope, don't see it. But I'm going through a corporate proxy. Those addresses you posted earlier don't appear to be mentioned in that page or the JavaScript it links to.
