mobile data

Answered

I recently have had a significant increase in data usage, tho nothing have changed except a new replacement phone. I have noted when wi fi and mobile date is off that when I press the home button there is often still active applications, even hours later, mostly internet or telstra one. Could this be using my data?

Re: mobile data

Background application usage is a normal function of the phone to support multi-tasking and, regrettably, if you do have a lot of apps you use regularly it can cause significant usage. On Android phones data usage is recorded on the handset and may help you to further identify causes of usage. I will include some information about this for you and at the bottom are instructions to disable background data usage.

You can view and set data limits on the handset by accessing the data usage menu by accessing Settings > Data Usage. In this menu you can set data warnings and limits to manage usage.

Underneath the alerts section is a graph that you can view usage within a particular time range by draging the sliders, which is a great way to work out where data has come from.

Under the graph will be a list of applications and their respective mobile usage. The highest hitters will be listed first so it may be immediately apparent as to the cause.

You may also want to prevent an application from using data in the background data, which can be done by tapping the app in this list and ticking the box to disable background data at the bottom.

Re: mobile data

Hi,

This most certainly could be the reason why you are getting more data. Applications may be running in the background as you said. You need to ensure these aren't running in the background by using the task manager on the handset.

Re: mobile data

How/where is the task manager (samsung galaxy 3).

And why is this happening when others with the same phone etc do not have this problem or have to go to the task manager?

With thanks Michelle

Re: mobile data

Thanks for that.

Is there any reason it happens, as other people with the same phone dont have this problem?

Is there anything I can do to stop it permanently?

Re: mobile data

You mention in here the Task Manager. But the user guide doesn't say anything about a task manager. Can anyone tell me how to find it?

Re: mobile data

The task manager can be found by holding down the home button and touching on the pie chart looking icon. This brings up the task manager showing you all the processes that are running on the handset. It is a good idea to stop the applications that you aren't using or require to run in the background.
