Can't reach advertised speeds on 50Mbps plan.

Just signed up the a FTTN Connect Plus plan @ 50Mbps and can only get 25 Mbps max. Level 2 technical dept  (whatever that is) is monitoring it. Am about 900 metres from the node and a Telstra technician has checked the connection and replaced the modem. What is the likely outcome here if the  speed doesn't improve. I am reluctant to go back to a 25Mbps plan like before at 12Mbps which is barely useable. Previously ADSL gave 18Mbps so a step backwards with NBN. Should I just wear the extra cost to get something that is just useable.

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Post your modem stats:
On a Premium Home Network Gateway, T-Gateway, Gateway Max, or Gateway Max 2
(TG587, TG797, TG799, TG800):
http://10.0.0.138/ > Advanced > Broadband

On a Telstra Gateway
(Sagemcom F@st 5355):
http://10.0.0.138/ > Advanced > Gateway Settings > Device Info > General > xDSL (Bottom of Page)

On a Frontier Gateway
(DJN2130):
http://192.168.0.1/ > Advanced > Broadband

Default password is generally 'admin'
You're looking for line rates, power levels, attenuation etc

Are the tests being run over Ethernet or WiFi?
Are they being run during peak times (3PM-12AM)?

Re: Can't reach advertised speeds on 50Mbps plan.

If you go back to the 50 Mbps plan you should still get 25 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up. When I was on 25 plan got 23 - 25 down and 4 - 5 up. On 50 plan now getting 36 down and 11 up.

Even though you are 900 Meters from Node the cable distance might be much greater. The link below is an unofficial site that shows cable distance to Node and expected speed. Locate your premises on the map and when you click on your premises the details will be displayed. (The map does not cover all premises)

Re: Can't reach advertised speeds on 50Mbps plan.

It takes at least 24 hours for speed boost to be applied. For the first 24 hours the connection will be limited to 25/5 so if you have just connected your link will be limited to 25/5 this will be indicated in the DSL line stats. The link speed will show 28/6.4 but maximum link speed will show greater than this.

Re: Can't reach advertised speeds on 50Mbps plan.

It has been 4 days and Telstra has confirmed the plan is active.

Re: Can't reach advertised speeds on 50Mbps plan.

Yes I got only 12 on the 25 plan so going back to that is not good. The new plan will give me 25 at best but I pay for 50.

Thanks for the map but I did look at is previously and no info for my area. I got the details from Telstra top speed 28.4Mbps and 906 metres.

Re: Can't reach advertised speeds on 50Mbps plan.

According to your line stats your link is capable of 40 Mbps but you are only getting 26 Mbps something is not right. There is also a 0 SNR which doesn't normally occur. These are my line stats when on the 25/5 speed tier.

Re: Can't reach advertised speeds on 50Mbps plan.

It should look something like this. The up time and the Status should be up and the connection time should be identical to xDSL link page.

Mine looks nothing like that it is definitely down. What is the next step?

Re: Can't reach advertised speeds on 50Mbps plan.

It looks like the modem is faulty. In your first post you mentioned the modem had been replaced. If you still have the old modem and it is NBN compatible try connecting the old modem and see if that fixes the problem.

Yes I still have the old modem (Sagemcom F@st 5355): it is the same as the new one. I will try it thanks for your help.
