Discord / Video Game Streaming

Hi everyone,

Based in Melbourne. Recently ive tried to stream some gaming to friends in both Steam and Discord  but the lag is terrible. It just doesnt work.

To trouble shoot ive turned off the firewall and still no luck.

I did however run through the Routet backup instead of NBN and it worked perfectly. I switched back to NBN and enabled a VPN and again, everything worked fine.

Based on what Ive done, it seems to be an issue on Telstras end  specifically with their routing of traffi.

I have friends with other providers in the area who do not experience  this on their NBN service.

Anyone got suggestions on how I can get Telstra to check their network, or do I need to just switch providers?

Thanks

Re: Discord / Video Game Streaming

Just a bit of an update.

This all comes down to streaming of gameplay. Whether streaming through Steam OR Discord, the content does not stream.

I have seen other posts where people have had similar issues with XBOX, but no solution.

The second I turn my VPN on, it works. Or if I pull the NBN cord out and let the router go to the 4G backup, it works.

Somewhere along Telstra's network it is identifying the data and blocking it from being sent, and it seems to only impact video game streaming data.

I have also seen other ISPs have this problem, but their network engineers have found that data was being incorrectly prioritised(?). I'm assuming somewhere along the Telstra NBN server infrastructure, the data is identified and 'blocked'.

Re: Discord / Video Game Streaming

Have you tried using a different DNS server to bypass Telstra broadband protect? You can change DNS servers in the modem at Advanced > Local network. Change both IPv6 and IPv4, save and reconnect device or reboot modem.

Re: Discord / Video Game Streaming

Did that, didnt make any difference. Even tried using Google DNS.

If I run through NBN using a VPN, it works fine.
If I run through 4G using VPN, it works fine.
If I run through 4G without VPN, it works fine.
If I run through NBN without VPN, it does NOT work.

In all four cases I'm using the Telstra Gateway Router (just unplugging the NBN cord to make the router go into 4G mode).

I did a trace rout with the following results:

The Telstra data is both travelling along the same path once it hits the Telstra server of 203.50.11.122.

But prior to that, Telstra data is sent to different servers depending on whether I'm connect to NBN or the 4G, and it is on one of these servers that I believe to be the problem. It's either identifying the streaming data as something and then blocking it (it effects any video game streaming, Steam or Discordetc), or some QoS is being applied and it's not sending the video data. I can ping the server so data is getting through, just not video data.

PS I've removed the internal network IPs from the tracer, that's why one starts at 2 and one starts at 5.

PPS If anyone in Melbourne on Telstra NBN is able to stream, that'd be good to know too. Clifton Hill here.
