New NBN connection - slower than ADSL2

New NBN FTTN connection is slower than previous ADSL Connection. I am paying for a tier 50 connection. My Modem stats are:

                                              Downstream                      Upstream

Actual Rate                            14168 Kbps                       1435 Kbps

Maximum Rate                       13448 Kbps                       1435 Kbps

Noise Margin                          7.20 dB                              6.20 dB

Attenuation                             28.90 dB                             0.00 dB

Power                                     13.60 dBm                          2.30 dBm

Does this look like a distance from the node issue or a bad line or something else?

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

To be honest, it looks like an ADSL2+ connection. Have you actually been changed across?

What does the Connection Type say?

I'll double check when I get home, but i'm sure its VDSL. My home phone has been moved across to voip.

Re: New NBN connection - slower than ADSL2

You can check your actual cable distance to the Node and the expected speed at this site.
http://nbnmtm.australiaeast.cloudapp.azure.com/
It is not a official site and it does not cover all locations. To get cable distance locate premises on map and then click your premises. If data exists the cable distance and a estimate of speed will be shown.

From the download line attenuation shown would expect a higher link speed than 14Mbps probably expect 30 Mbps.

Re: New NBN connection - slower than ADSL2

Unfortunately, the distance to the node is unknown. Probably another 500-600m.
Technology: FTTN
Distance Premise-Pillar: 449m
Distance Node-Pillar: No Node Location available
Estimated Download Rate: 58-98 Mbps
Estimated Upload Rate: 23-39 Mbps
# of Premise: 1

Re: New NBN connection - slower than ADSL2

Even at a distance of 1Km should get between 20 and 30 Mbps download and 5 to 10 upload.

Re: New NBN connection - slower than ADSL2

With 28.9 attenuation, 14mbps sync is unfortunately quite believable

@kkkkkk do you have any additional phone sockets in the house? If you do it will pay to get someone out to isolate the main socket from the rest of them

So, a bad line, either external or internal? Will removing additional sockets help much?

Re: New NBN connection - slower than ADSL2

Removing additional sockets can result in a significant increase in speed. Even removing the additional sockets if you are 1 KM in cable distance from Node the best you can expect is 30 Mbps.

Gotta love the NBN. Promises 100Mbps, delivers 13Mbps.

Absolutely... In my case, removing less than 10m of external cabling improved speed from 20+ to 30+

Re: New NBN connection - slower than ADSL2

NBN never promised 100. Their guarantee is 12 and depending on technology, you might be stuck at that...

Re: New NBN connection - slower than ADSL2

Removing sockets took mine from 17Mbps to 28Mbps. It can make a huge difference.
