Re: Obtaining a new IP number

Unless you're paying for a Static IP ($10 a month off the top of my head, would appear on bill), rebooting the modem will generally change your IP address

Re: Obtaining a new IP number

Couple of days ago I inquired about VPN's - after being scammed.  The response indicated it's probably not worthwhile.  This response prompts my next question:

If I terminated my Telstra account, that shoud close off the IP# I've had for years.

If I then started a new Telstra account, would I be allocated a new IP number ?

My rationale is; a new IP# has no exposure to the ethernet, provided I was very cautios with my web surfing and data transmission (email) I shouldn't receive visits from scammers - ?

But then I read thru other posts re VPN's and I see that IP numbers are not static ?

What is the situation here ?

Re: Obtaining a new IP number

Telstra IP's are dynamic unless you're paying for it not to be. Anytime the modem disconnects from the internet (E.g dropout or reboot), the IP can potentially change. You don't need cancel your account and get a new service on a new account.

You're going to get scam/phishing stuff no matter what you do, its basically one of the unwritten laws of the internet Smiley Wink. A VPN can act like a buffer to protect your anonymity on the internet but the best form of anti-scam/phishing/malware/virus is always going to be common sense
