Perth high ping to Singapore? (Bad routing)

Hello guys,

Been trying to play on some EU Servers recently and have been noticing some insanely high latency (370-500 average). I ran a tracert and found out it's because I was being routed from Perth > Melbourne > Sydney > Los Angeles > Europe. The mates that I play with get ~260-280 latency/ping and they're tracert shows that their route goes from Perth > Singapore > Europe. I tried using a VPN to force my traffic through Singapore to get to Europe, but I get a minimum of 135ms to Singapore (through VPN), whereas my friends (all on iiNet) get 48ms.

I used to play on SG Servers with mates who had gone back for National Service and I used to get ~55 ping average to those servers. I heard and read about damage and issues with the singapore submarine cable (not quite memorable on the exact name) and how it was fixed recently. I was hyped when my mates started getting low ping to singapore again but my ping stayed at 250. I also read on another post that another source of damage was identified on the line and that repairs were made. However I believe this is a straight routing issue.

Here is the tracert to sgp.valve.net. Although my goal is not to get a better route to this server in particular, I would like to have a better and direct route to singapore in general.

Tracing route to sgp.valve.net [103.28.54.2]

If required I can get my mate to provide a trace route.

Thanks, Ryan.

EDIT: Forgot to mention I'm on Telstra Velocity (Fibre lines) and my friends are on ADSL2+ (interlacing ON)

Re: Perth high ping to Singapore? (Bad routing)

Hi Ryan,

Looking at the traceroute that you have provided, I'm not sure why you feel that you are being routed from Perth to Melbourne to Sydney to before going to LA. Can you show me the hops that you believe are for Melbourne, Sydney, LA and Europe?

Re: Perth high ping to Singapore? (Bad routing)

Hi Ryan,

The second traceroute that you've provided is going to a totally different destination.  It is for a server in Europe, not one based in Singapore.

Please be aware that routing will take the best available path. You can find out more information about international routing here: http://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/General-Internet-KB/International-routing-latency-and-ping/ta-...

Re: Perth high ping to Singapore? (Bad routing)

Hey Ben,

That is not what I'm after here. The second traceroute is my final traceroute to the servers in Europe. My issue is that I am routed From Perth > Sydney > US > Europe. All my other friends are routed from Perth > Singapore > Europe.

As you said, routing will take the best available path. If my Perth > Sydney > US > Europe is the best available path, how come I get almost (if not more than) twice as much latency as my friends?

What I am trying to get across is: Due to my bad routing to Singapore, the best available path to Europe is now through Sydney and the United States. If my routing to Singapore is what it should be, then the best available path should be through Singapore then to Europe. Is there anyway to fix this?

Re: Perth high ping to Singapore? (Bad routing)

We have sent the high latency issues towards Singapore to Telstra Global for further investigation.

However, regarding your second traceroute - Our International links via Singapore are exclusive to destinations within the Asia region. You can see a map of the international routes here:  http://www.telstraglobal.com/images/Telstra_Global_Network_Map.pdf

Are you able to provide some trace routes so that we can compare you and your friends  paths from Perth do the same destination? We will also require their IP addresses. You can send this via a private message if you prefer.

Hi Ryeuu,

Some work has been done on the routing between here and Singapore. Have you noticed any improvement?

Re: Perth high ping to Singapore? (Bad routing)

Hello Shelly!

An update on the latency, it's indeed much better! I'm getting anywhere from 50 - 60 average to singapore now.

At the moment my friends are really busy and haven't been on too much, but I'll get them to give me a traceroute asap. They use WTFast, a vpn/routing program and they get connected from Singapore then to France for the game we're playing.

Did you fix it for one person or something?

I dont really care about valve.net. but all the game servers in singapore I connect to range between 160 and 300. There has been this problem with your network for a long time now, and its nothing to do with the line quality, its very poor network peering.
