Phone call from woman saying our Internet will be disconnected tomorrow.

Answered

We had a phone call tonight from a woman who claimed to be from Telstra, saying that our Internet was going to be disconnected tomorrow because our downloads were interfering with Telstra computers. When I claimed "[Bleep]" she said thank you and hung up. Anyone else had this one?

The link you provided for reporting a hoax call doesn't have an option for reporting hoax calls. It says to contact you instead, which is why I contacted you. :/

Yes I know. This is the page that tells me I need to contact you, which is why we're having this conversation now. There is no option to report phone scams. The only options are:

Hacking, Port Scanning or attempted intrusion

Unsolicited Bulk Email or Spam

Phishing Scams

Virus Prohibited content (eg: pornography or sexually explicit content)

Defamatory material (eg: publication by another person of a false and derogatory statement about you)

Copyright infringement (eg: if you believe somebody else has misappropriated material over which you hold copyright

None of these options cover phone calls from people claiming to be from Telstra. It says for other issues please contact us. This option leads me to you and all you have done is send me back to the page that told me I had to contact you. :/

I recieved one of these calls today! From an overseas number, I picked up and eventually he said hello, used our name, and then said 'i'm sorry to tell you but your internet is being disconnected from today onwards', I said, 'onwards?' He said 'yep', at which point I was ready to hang up.. He continued 'so you're happy with no internet?' & I said 'Yep' and thanked him for calling and hung up.

Same experience, 4th time. First 3 times they stated it was a windows machine sending out viruses from my location.  Said strange as we only use Mac, they hung up.  Today, they pushed to get access, said I would contact Telstra and if it was a scam, trace the number as it will be on my records and report to International Fraud unit of the Australian Police, they begged me not to and hung up.

Hi

Today we received a telephone call from a woman (Indian?) claiming to be a Telstra representative and advising our internet service would be terminated tomorrow.

We hung up but can't find a way to report it to Telstra - going around in circles with websites and forms.

Back to Crowdsupport to share the experience.

I think they're hoping you'll panic and agree to pay some fee not to be disconnected.

Microsoft Windows is another company they claim to be ringing from.

Once I strung them along for about 45 minutes.

When they told me that my machine was sending out errors I asked what OS it was using and they replied Windows XP or Windows 7.

I replied that I was still using "Windows Milennium Edition (I wasn't) and they said oh you really are in trouble".

Anyway I kept on asking annpying stupid questions and eventually told them the call was being recorded and would be handed to the AFP and other government forces.

The woman got quite angry and told me I had no right to record the call and hung up.

Re: Phone call from woman saying our Internet will be disconnected tomorrow.

My caller sounded Indian, called herself Anna and claimed that she was from Telstra. She told me that Telstra is going to have to disconnect my internet service as my IP address had been taken over by a hacker they had tracked to my computer who was causing havoc with the whole Telstra network. Because I don't have a Telstra internet connection at the moment, I called he a scammer and hung up.  She however, rang back straight away very angry asking why I had hung up.  She was still claiming the call was genuine and urgent. When I refused to cooperate, she put me on to her supervisor whom I called a scammer. This new Indian-accented person read me my name and address to prove she was from Telstra. I asked for a number to ring her back to confirm her story but she got very angry indeed. She said I would be sorry tomorrow when my internet was turned off. I said "Good luck with that!" and hung up again.

Re: Phone call from woman saying our Internet will be disconnected tomorrow.

These scammers don't subscribe to the do not call register because they are scammers, not legitimate businesses. They don't care about the do not call register. They get your details from the white pages, simple as that. At one stage we were getting mulitple calls daily (you'd think they'd realise if we didn't believe them the first 500 times we're not going to start believing them because they've called up yet again.), so we had Telstra put a one month trace on our phone. Whenever they called we'd just talk over the top of them informing them that Telstra had put a trace on the line and would be using their details in a court of law at which point they'd hang up and eventually stopped calling. I don't know if the trace was successful or not, because the person we were dealing with at Telstra only got back to us for one call, then never got back to us for any other calls. We were sent a link to contact the Telstra person who was supposed to call us back, but she failed to call back one time and the link we got was good for one use only. So try bluffing the callers by telling them Telstra has a trace on your line and is gathering evidence to use against them in court. The reason we needed the trace was because at one stage they got shirty with us, then kept calling repeatedly just to be a-holes because we wouldn't take their bait.

So after making her repeat herself three times she than became i little frustrated especially when i replied excellent i have been waiting two weeks for this to happen. I then started on my own little rant about how i have had to call over half a dozen times so what time will it be done and could she please do it now i then let her explain one more time to which i replied oh sorry wrong person i am with TPG not telstra to which she hung up.

Over the past few weeks i have been receiveving calls from people claiming that they're from telstra. They claim that there is a problem with my internet security. Hang up the phone when they say this!!! They might provide you with their work ID and the address of their office but don't be fooled!!! They requested for me to go on my computer but i soon realised that this isn't right. When he called he didn't even ask questions to verify my identy which is very odd! I told him if Telstra had found a problem with my internet they will at least send me an email or letter, but he continues on saying the reason we are not sending you emails because there is a problem with your internet, after he sad that i knew this guy was a total scam!!! I get my bills online so i was certain that Telstra are able to send emails to their customers. Beware people!

Bypass the scammers with Australian government "Do Not Call" Register!

Hi all,

I'm staying with my parents currently and just had a female with an Indian accent call, claiming to be from Telstra stating "your Internet is about to be disconnected in two hours!!" I started laughing and she angrily replied "why are you laughing, this is not funny!" Which made me laugh even more and then I hung up.

Then I did what it seems other people on here have done....I googled "Telstra phonecall internet disconnection hoax" and came across these comments on the Telstra crowdsupport forum. I'm glad I did because lots of people's tales on here are very amusing....like keeping the scammers on the line for almost an hour and playing tricks back. You guys need a medal for your patience, humor and making me smile when I really just wanted to throw my parent's telstra landline through the window.

BUT...I do want to share with everyone something I've known about for years. It's the Aust government's FREE & LEGITIMATE (yay for legitamacy!) "Do Not Call Register"

Website www.donotcall.gov.au and phone number 1300 792 958

I had my parent's number on it years ago when it first started (I think in about 2009??) but I think it expires every few years or so and now they have started getting these awful, rude and hassling calls again. My Dad has cancer, my Mum has her own health issues and ill or not ill, who needs someone from India arguing with you on your own personal phone number? No one. Certainly not me. And I do really feel for the elderly who may be lead astray, or at the very least, become very stressed by these fraudsters.

So I re-registered Mum and Dad's home number with the do not call register again today. Apparently, according to the confirmation email I received, it may take up to 30 days to stop the scammers from calling....and you do need to bear in mind, it will not prevent political parties, religious associations and not-for-profit callers from calling. The government seems to have made an exception for these, although I don't agree with that either!

Anyway, to me this seems like the best option to take, and best advice I could share, as informing Telstra doesn't seem to do anything......and I do get that, I imagine Telstra's legal team has an uphill battle working out which scammers to target as a priority...and how they even do that I just don't know. And it wouldn't be a short process, shutting these scammers down. Even if they do, the next one just starts up. Best just to put your name on the register and bypass the whole lot of them and enjoy your cup of tea without hassles!

Soph

p.s big disclaimer.....I have nothing against Indian people by the way! Or India...it's actually on my bucket list of places to travel to. I won't be taking a tour of the "Telstra" call centre.

Re: Phone call from woman saying our Internet will be disconnected tomorrow.

i just received a similar call 40 minutes ago from an Indian lady who claimed that her name was Anna de Souza, that she was from Telstra's Technical Support Department located at 215 Miller Street North Sydney. Her Telstra employee ID is supposed to be D650650120.

She has been harassing my flatmate (who does not use the computer) for a few months but this was the first time that I picked up the phone. She told me that my internet connection will be discontinued within 30 minutes unless I fix a few problems on my computer (with her help, of course). She was reading from a script and when I asked about firewalls she got stumped. I sensed a scam and said I don't have time to talk to her and that if Telstra is going to disconnect my internet they would have also contacted me via email. She said that I should be worried about losing my internet connection but I said, worst case, I could always change my account to another provider. With that I hung up.

I tried to contact Telstra via phone but could not get through but fortunately found this website. I must admit that some of the responses here have been quite amusing but my flatmate, who is now totally fed up, has decided that the next time he gets a phone call from someone in India or with an Indian accent claiming to be a Telstra employee that person will cop some colourful language from him!

I got a call 4 Aug from a scammer who said that the ADSL line I was using had been hacked and they had to cut my internet off for 6 months.
I knew straight away that she was an indian scammer from a call center.
When I told her she was just a scammer she hung up

What gets me is Telstra employ all these cheap overseas call centers who have all our details and allow anyone from overseas to get a number to call us with.

If they are scammers surely with todays technology telstra can monitor or see where the number is from and block it.

So many Australians are getting ripped off or hacked and what is telstra doing about it ?? Nothing.

Come on Telstra,  start doing something about it...

I am getting sick and tired of getting calls every week or so from these Indian Scam call centers.
Step up Telstra and protect your customers..

UPDATE
I just read Telstra are doing something.
Yes they are mailing out a brouchure to 6 million customers to tell them " what authorized Telstra staff will say when they contact customers on the telephone."

Well thats inteligent isnt it. Mail some to the scammers too so they can sound more like a real Telstra Staff calling you..

Her phone number on my message bank was the same number listed in my caller ID

it was 02 4965 9573

When I dialed that number I got the Telstra message this number is not connected.

So they are spoofing phone numbers now

They are getting better at appearing lioke a REAL Telstra call

Re: Phone call from woman saying our Internet will be disconnected tomorrow.

I just received a call today at 14:00

Female, Indian calling from a horrible line. She claimed my IP address was unsafe and that my Internet would be terminated tomorrow for security reasons. I couldn’t understand what she was saying due to the heavy accent (no disrespect) and the atrocious line she was calling from.

I told her I was with TPG, and she advised Telstra are in charge of the lines (which I believe is technically true). I asked her how I can avoid having my Internet being terminated and she said “I’m happy to prove I’m actually from Telstra” and this is when I knew it was a scam. She asked me to go to my computer, I told her I can’t and that I’m at work.

Scripted, poorly executed and overall $h!t performance from this scammer.

ha, I must have had her sister call today... Eliana de Souza today Telstra number D860052. ;-)  Internet being disconnected tomorrow for three months and they've been sending us messages to some control centre of our computer she says, not via email.  Hackers have taken control of our computer... yeah right.  She wanted me to log on to the computer, told her it wasn't here since it's a laptop.

 She hung up.

Re: Phone call from woman saying our Internet will be disconnected tomorrow.

I had this the other day again.

When I called the scammer out on the scam he then started to say 'I want to **bleep** you' repeatedly. I shouted at him in disgust and hung up. He called back immediately and said it again. He called again and said it again. At this point I was in tears so I left the house.

Later on, he called back and said it again, a couple of times, before I hung up. I immediately called Telstra's 'nuisance call' centre and they have put a trace on my line for the next 30 days.

The scammers were bad enough but when they're being abusive like this it really rattles me. I've told my kids they are not to answer the home phone under any circumstances now as I do not want them to be subjected to this abuse.
