SEA-ME-WE 3 cable and Routing from Perth to Asia.

So here's the story:

I use to get around 60ms latency on nearby asian countries like singapore here from Perth. Then SEA-ME-WE 3 cable got broken for almost 2 months. Telstra started routing packets from perth all round the other side of the country. Since then, I've been getting some 200ms+.

SEA-ME-WE 3 cable has now been fixed. Ive now been getting around 100ms to singapore, which is nice, but is nowhere near what I've had before.

Turns out Telstra is still routing my packets all across australia, up to sydney (hops 6 to 10) before leaving the country through god knows where.

How long will it take for Telstra to actually start using SEA-ME-WE 3 cable?

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Re: SEA-ME-WE 3 cable and Routing from Perth to Asia.

Same problem also in Perth.

When is the routing going to be updated to go direct to Singapore rather than via eastern states?

The cable has been fixed for sometime....

Darwin... It is even worse here... 220 ms to Singapore also taking a detour to Syd... Before ping was ~120ms.

Re: SEA-ME-WE 3 cable and Routing from Perth to Asia.

There is currently a cable fault with one of the segments of SMW-3 and repairs have been delayed due to weather. Updates indicate that these repairs are expected to be completed today and the routing should return to normal if no further issues with that route are found.

Thanks that seems to be good news....however.

According to Vocus -

"18/10/2017 08:21 AEST Sea-Me-We 3 repair works have been completed and all services have been restored"

I cannot find any subsequent faults logged by Vocus

Are you saying that there is yet another fault in the cable which is not reported by Vocus?

I can see in our systems that there is a segment of SMW-3 listed as being repaired which was delayed due to weather. I cannot comment regarding Vocus.

Re: SEA-ME-WE 3 cable and Routing from Perth to Asia.

The only reason I can think of for this incident not being updated by Telstra is that their technicians has not paid attention to Vocus' update in their status page (seeing as Vocus didn't seem to really make public announcements of repair completion outside of their little status page), in which case here is the reminder:

SEA-ME-WE 3 cable has now been fixed and fully online.

http://status.vocus.com.au/

http://status.vocus.com.au/view-incident.aspx?IncidentID=349

Only thing that's left now is to remind Telstra to check up and update the routing.

I would like to second cadet Caballes19. Obviously, Telstra techs should be able to see whether their link through Vocus is online.

Shelly

thanks for your assistance but Vocus are saying SMW3 is fully operational - and they are part owners of the cable so should not be ignored..

Telstra routing from Perth still going via eastern states  can you please investigate why particularly as you mentioned that the 'fault' would be repaired yesterday?

Re: SEA-ME-WE 3 cable and Routing from Perth to Asia.

I think they are routing us through Sydney and then back to Perth!

Those are surely Telstra routers in Perth:

Might be wrong though....

Hi Eddoras,

I've rechecked this. According to the information that is available to me SMW3 is still faulty and repairs are still underway.

Thanks Kenobi but I have contacted Vocus direct and their response is

'Hi,

We have resolved your ticket VTK10700003 - SMW3 Cable outage.

Resolution Details

SMW3 cable is repaired. '

Can you please check whether your source is correctly updated and advise what my escalation point is as there is clearly a comms breakdown somewhere

Thanks

Re: SEA-ME-WE 3 cable and Routing from Perth to Asia.

I live in Adelaide and I am not sure if this could be the issue due to this cable, but my apple music that is uploaded is very very slow. Music coming off apple servers (that is not in my library is ok) but all of my manually uploaded music is a pain to stream. I am on 50 mbit connection getting 47 download on speed test. utube nflix streams fast...I was on adsl internode before with 4 mbit connection this never happened....are these issues somewhat linked with this cable (routing).

Have also noticed using VPN connecting to Melbourne ALL music streams fine manually uploaded and apple music too...

Re: SEA-ME-WE 3 cable and Routing from Perth to Asia.

I'm starting to think this is a miscommunication between the consortium management and Telstra. Vocus seemed to have confirmed with the consortium and ASEAN explorer that SMW3 between Perth and Singapore is indeed fixed.

This leads me to a theory: You said SMW3 is "still faulty". Is Telstra particularly asking the consortium for "fault" on SMW3 in general or for a "fault" in the line between Singapore and Perth? Because if Telstra is asking for a fault in SMW3 in general and the consortium is saying yes, then they may be referring to this:

http://www.vir.com.vn/international-cable-lines-to-be-fixed-next-week.html

In which case, then please re-verify the information, because this fault in SMW3 is in the section of South China Sea, far from the fault affecting us; and the only country affected by that is Vietnam.

However, this seems to confirm what I said. SMW3 was fixed all along from last week (Oct 18). Hop 8 seems to be the edge of Perth towards Singapore (Singtel). But since this very particular hop has been used on my first post, that meant that SMW3 was in fact actively working all along. Its just that Telstra seem to route us to Sydney and then back to Perth, and all Telstra had done right now was eliminate the route to Sydney. At least, that's what this thing seem to suggest.

There's still a slew of inconsistencies and problems with how Telstra handles communications to Asia from here on Perth, that has been going on for a long while even before SMW3 broke that I'd like to address (particularly, with regards to how whatever IP address Telstra give me seems to drastically affect my latency and route performance); but for now, Telstra seemed to have eliminated the round trip to Sydney.

Ok, so here comes the bigger problem.

A while ago I was given an IP address with 60.228.x.x , and that was I used to do the previous tracert.

Now, suddenly, telstra's dhcp gave me an address with 101.186.x.x. Here's the result:

It went horrible! This is a recurring thing with telstra. What's going on with this hops 7 and 8. Depending on your IP, they ALWAYS vary their performance, from desirable to horribly worse!

Here's another example of a trace to jakarta:

Here's on with 60.228.x.x

1.PNG

Here's one with 121.215.x.x

Its always with hops 7 and 8 that screws up, nothing else. Can somebody from Telstra investigate this?

Look at hops 7 and 8. MASSIVE spike just because I got a different IP address from Telstra. Looks like there was some small variations in the route but all of them have very little latency impact except for this 2 particular hops.

This wouldn't be much of a problem is I can get an IP address with 60.228x.x. or 1.122.x.x. occasional by resetting the router, which are the IP addresses producing good results;

but IPoE keeps giving me 101.186.x.x and 12x.x.x., which after lots and lots of testing, seemed to be the IP addresses that has these horrible latencies. And if NBN is only relegated to IPoE, then god help me.

At this rate, there's NO point in fixing routing to use SMW3 if this problem exists.
