Security on NBN router

I have had to reset my NBN router at least twice because it has been locked out by Telstra - I have changed the default password, which then doesn't work.

The resolution is to test four standard passwords Telstra use and then reset!

This seems to be contrary to the latest Telstra security report: Moreover, the scale of individual DDoS attacks is also rising with the advent of IoT. Connected devices, especially consumer devices, such as digital cameras, are being installed across the world and many of them have not been secured - left with factory default settings and passwords. The implication of this is that attackers could install malware on the devices, program them for future use, or enlist them in a global army of bots with minimal investments.

Re: Security on NBN router

What is the model number of your NBN modem/router?

For IoT devices, such as smart cameras or irrigation controllers, I connect them to my guest network to isolate them from my primary devices.

Re: Security on NBN router

It's a Sagemcom F@st 5355.

I'm not sure how the guest network will help me if I cannot access the router. Everything still works - it's just that I cannot access the web-based admin portal to make changes, as required.

Re: Security on NBN router

@cf4, have you had any issues changing the admin password for your F@st 5355?

Re: Security on NBN router

The only issues I have seen is if you try to use a very complicated password. When this happens the gateway resets the password to nothing. If this has happened you can access the gateway by leaving password blank.

If there is no F@st5355 between the T symbol and the Admin box it means the browser is not communicating with the gateway and a cache page has been loaded. In this case rebooting gateway fixes the problem.

Re: Security on NBN router

There is know issue with some "Linux based" systems not accepting some special characters in passwords... These are the "reserved" characters (or just some of them)…
