Slow ADSL2+ speed at WDGW exchange

Over the last couple of months my speed here in Wodonga West has been all over the place.

According to ADSL2exchanges I am very close to my local exchange. This is true I know exactly where it is. See below:

You are 356 m from WDGW as the crow flies. Estimated cable length of 587.4 m. Estimated speed of 23666 Zone 3

Here are a few speed tests I have done over time.

Can someone please explain for me why I'm having to put up with such poor performance when I'm so close to my exchange.

Don't tell me to get a new modem as I have just bought a new one and have tried three others all getting the same kind of result. My filters are all new also so its not from that either.

I'm paying for ADSL2+ not ADSL somewhere there abouts but not quite and you are getting more than 110Kb/s and that's all you need and that's all we will guarantee you can get.

It does not matter how many PC's are connected at any one time or even in what way. Wired and wireless makes no difference.
my curent modem is a netgear DGND3700 (1 month old)
Connecton Speed: 17757kbps D/S 1022kbps U/S Current synced speed but download speed says no.
Line Attenuation: 29.0 D/S 15.3 U/S
Noise Margin: 6.1db D/S 7.0 U/S

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Re: Slow ADSL2+ speed at WDGW exchange

So it's ADSL2+, and your speeds are fluctuating. All the results are within spec, and

Some of the results on there are pretty good. Just so you know the results you are getting are in Mbps, which means that 15Mbps is 15,000kbps.

Your on a Zone 3 exchange, which means rural, so its likely the backhaul isn't there to support everyone (Congestion).

Congestion would only occur during periods of high network use, which isn't at 3am (one would assume).

According to http://www.telstrawholesale.com.au/products/data-broadband/adsl/adsl-reports-plans/index.htm there are 3 DSLAMs that have been targeted for upgrade. One was done Feb 2011, the others are planned for March 2012 (and one still has an "expected" date of Jan 2012, but not confirmed as completed).

Speedtest.net isn't  really that reliable, but could you try using the Melbourne (Telstra) server instead of the Sydney Server and see how that goes? What are you trying to do on the interent that doesn't work with 15Mbps?

Just confirming you are in a congested area due to capacity of the backhaul to support the increased internet traffic from your local area. You are on a DSLAM with the ID of "QWDGWE4004M" which has an estimated completion date of Mar-2012 if you look this ID up on the listing from the Telstra Wholesale website link. So should see an increase in speed performance this month once they've finished the backhaul upgrade in your area.

Firstly some results are very good I agree with a best result of 15531kb/s on 28/12/2011 1:31 PM EST (15.53 Mb/s) and a worst speed of 1719kb/s (1.72 Mb/s) on 3/3/2012 5:09 PM EST to me seems a very large difference.

I have tried the Melbourne Telstra server but results are normaly roughly the same or marginally worse as my traffic seems to get routed via Sydney.

Re: Slow ADSL2+ speed at WDGW exchange

Well can't even watch a youtube video without it pausing every 15 seconds for upto 2 mins at a time. So a 3 min clip takes upto 12 mins to watch. Feels like someone has wound the clock back 12 years to when I first had dialup...

Love my latest ping tests to..

Re: Slow ADSL2+ speed at WDGW exchange

Ok so my DSLAM has a now expected completion date of 9 April 2012 with a relief code of MIGRATE.

Can anybody fill me in on just what this means and what I the customer will see from this?

Re: Slow ADSL2+ speed at WDGW exchange

I also have the exact same issues with the Wod West Exchange. I have been waiting for this upgrade to happen for a little while now. Its quite frustrating as i believe its the only Exchange in Wodonga to have this bad of congestion and I also believe it is the last one to be upgraded.

Re: Slow ADSL2+ speed at WDGW exchange

Absolutely pethetic trying to play a few rounds of BF3 and I have ping of 595 to an aussie server this is the worst ISP I'm glad my contract is now up with you lot and I'll be moving on to an ISP that gives a rats about it customers.

I just love these pings we get it feels so grand to have such outstanding service from the largest ISP in the country.

Re: Slow ADSL2+ speed at WDGW exchange

Oh yay now the MIGRATE solution is pushed back another time to 8 May. That is going to happen this year isnt it?

Maybe we should just wait till 2015 when the NBN comes to our insignificant zone 3 rural 38+ thousand little town.
