Block international incoming calls

Answered

Hi,

Was wondering if its possible to block all incoming calls from a particular country on the home phone line?

Alternatively, with phone number redirection, whats the secondary number it gets diverted to and is there a regular fee for using this service?

thanks

Re: Block international incoming calls

While it's not possible to block calls from specific countries, it is possible to block all international calls to your Telstra home landline service. I did this recently to stop overseas scammers that were calling frequently.

It costs nothing to block international incoming calls and does not prevent you making overseas calls, but be aware it changes the way your dial tone sounds.

To prevent anyone from overseas calling your home phone dial:

*92# (star 92 hashtag)

You can remove the block at any time by dialling:

#92# (hashtag 92 hashtag)

You'll hear the dial tone has returned to normal.

It's very handy to be able to remove and reinstate the block as often as you need to, especially if you're expecting a call from friends overseas.

I hope this helps.

To answer your first question, to the best of my knowledge its not possible to block incoming International calls based on country of origin.

Number Redirection can be setup to redirect to any number. If its for unwelcome calls, I would suggest reviewing the information at http://www.telstra.com.au/unwelcome-calls or contacting them to see what they can do.

Re: Block international incoming calls

Hi nuoi_phung,

As Ben mentioned above, it's not possible to block incoming international calls.

However it's possible to setup call forwarding or number redirection from your home phone. Refer to below FAQs.

How do I use Call Forward?

How do I set up a Phone Number Redirection?

I hope this helps Smiley Happy

in a default setup no, but.....

I was having an issue with similar where I was getting calls every night at around 3am, my calls are managed through my router and it supports call filtering so I have some numbers that I do allow at anytime, ones I don't want will hear ringing on their end but there's nothing on my end besides call logging in my router

With the right hardware it can be done

Thanks for the info jokiin. I was referring to actually blocking those calls from our end here via system which we aren't able to do.

I wonder if they have the right home telephone handset/equipment that they may be able to do what you've done.

Taking your racisim out of the picture, Telstra does offer 2 specific services that will help you in reducing these calls.

Step 1 - Get Calling Number Display - This product allows you to screen your calls (Incl. Overseas calls)

Step 2 - Get Messagebank - This product allows you to allow calls to divert to a Messaging service and allows you to screen your calls.

Total Cost - $12 a month

Re: Block international incoming calls

Something that definitely DOES work providing you don't need to have a common (Telstra / Optus / etc)  phone number and are prepared to install a VOIP phone system. For some reason, only the number ranges used by conventional landline phone companies are known to spamlords whilst the VOIP number ranges are not.  Note particularly that an unlisted phone number provides absolutely no protection whatever against unwanted phone calls. The reason is that call centres used a phone dialler system that calls every number in a given range and doesn't know or care whether ang particular number is  listed or unlisted.  For example, if number range (03) 9287 is programmed, the system will try EVERY number between 9287 0000 and 9287 9999.  a VOIP number range however doesn't usually get  into phone directories and for this and other reasons, the telemarketers don't target them. Its a pity Tel$tra doesn't come to the party as it would be a simple matter to block calls from certain countries... one can only assume the call centre business done in certain countries is more attractive than goodwill toward Australians.

Re: Block international incoming calls

VOIP numbers are certainly 'real' numbers however as I stated previously, spamlords don't appear to know about them. I've never had an unwanted call on a VOIP number and I'm not aware of anyone who has. The non-listing of  some or all VOIP number ranges in phone directories may well be the reason. For what its worth, I've never doen business with iinet so if you are implying their VOIP numbers are listed in Telstra phone directories, I wouldn't be in the least surprised if those ones are gettting telemarketer calls.

I suppose the point I'm making is that it doesn't have anything to do with White/Yellow Pages when it comes to diallers. The ACMA has a register of all allocated numbers (http://web.acma.gov.au/numb/ ) which can be accessed by anyone Smiley Happy

Re: Block international incoming calls

Of course VOIP numbers would be known to ACMA, after all they issues the number ranges in the first place.

whatever ... all indications are that the telemarketing fraternity haven't (for whatever reason) chosen to harrass owners of VOIP numbers.  I've used several different VSPs over a lot of years & virtually all the residential numbers I call regularly are VOIP ones. None of the subscribers have telemarketer problems on their VOIP numbers and in fact the ONLY telemarketer calls are on Tel$tra numbers.  Most of us don't take ANY calls on the Telstra numbers these days as the only times the number rings is when some speaker of gobbledegook attempts to flog some crap I don't want or need.

Re: Block international incoming calls

We have also been suffering heaps of spam calls from India, and we usually get one everyday, sometime twice. I had my retail phone  provider (Internode) get Telstra to monitor the line for 20 days and we kept a log of the exact time and date of the calls and left the line open for 5 mins after each call to create a timestamp for them.

However this approach is like using a bucket to bail out the titanic. This is a massive problem right across Australia and it's about time the Federal poice and Telstra do something about it. I have written to TIO, ATUG, Telstra and the Federal Communications Minister recently.

A friend on Whirlpool who is a senior tech inside Telstra admitted to me that Telstra already know who the culprits are but won't block them becasue there are international trade agreements in place with India that a block like this would breach. He also told me that Telstra make a nice profit of these calls as they get the international interconnect charges.

This is what I wrote to the minister about.

Hi, I have looked but can't find any router-could you please tell me the name of the router, and do you use this for a landline in Australia..like a TLS landline? Thanks

Re: Block international incoming calls

I know you can call forward (or redirect) with TLS.

The charge is the cost of the phone call you direct it to..and there may be a charge for having call forwarding feature as well depending on your plan I guess.

I haven't done this with my TLS phone, but my parents have a similar problem with their OPtus phone and I set up call forwarding , which is free if you direct all calls., and it toggles on and off..the cost to my parents was free as their plan had landline calls free and I redirected the calls to another landline phone.

The problem was we got 2 beeps for each redirection...some callers would just retry for over 5 hrs constantly...

So I ended up blocking some nos , and then in the end I just gave up and used their selective call accept feature which ONLY lets thru the nos you list. The problem is they no longer have a phone that anyone can ring..like long lost friends from decades ago who may have served in the army with my father etc..or the doctors nurse rang via different line from the reception (their PABX generated a different private no). Also everyone else KNOWS they are blocked as you get a message saying the phone has restricted the calls they receive...and you dont really want this to happen..just a ring out would be fine...

It IS possible to add private nos to selective list if you just add them as the last no dialled. You dont need  to know the no, the redirection/blocking takes place at the exchange..so I dont see why the beeps with Optus on the call forwarding!!!

BUT unless I just used the selective call accept I couldn't block all the nuisance calls ..the overseas calls  and internet (SKYPE) calls were impossible..and they were the huge majority of overseas calls.

So ANNOYING to be told by call centres about the do not call register..that does not work for overseas or internet calls...which most are!

TLS did block overseas calls on my home phone when I phone them , and were very friendly about it (but only if I blocked all overseas call...not a selected country). I was told they were working on the software /hardware to try to do that though.

Optus had no way of blocking overseas calls..so TLS wins there.

TLS (I think) can block all calls between certain hours..which may be a solution..at least at night . Optus doesnt have this facility.

Some nos mentioned in this thread are overseas nos..but some are computer generated no.. I was told by Optus they cannot bar these as the computer generates a different phone no each call...people using Skype and similar computer phones do this. The no  was 001196 ...  That one mentioned above in thread , this is WHY everyone had different annoying phone calls on this no..its the computer generated no. It can come from Australia or anywhere in the world.

We need to be able to bar ALL nos that start with 00119 ( I think) to get rid of all skype calls and most nuisance calls from overseas.   So there is an urgent need to bar GROUPS of nos , not just individual itemised nos (ie bar or redirect).

good sugestions as to whih no to use for redirection..if you are only receiving nuisance calls from a particular no, just use this phone no to redirect the calls back to itself...this way it is always engaged.

..or redirect to a fax ..that way they get a nice ring in their ears...

otherwise redirect to where you can monitor the calls and maybe put an answering machine on there...but i still got the beeps...(that was with Optus, have yet to try with TLS as I dont have free calls..and dont want a huge phone bill..

Hence the wondering where I can purchase a router mentioned.,... and if it works with a landline or only with a VOIP phone...

I know some new landline phones have the facility to bloack all alls between selected hours which may be an option for some...we need the ability to block or redirect groups of calls though. I also would be prepared to pay at least $10 a month fopr the ability to do this!

Re: Block international incoming calls

G'day tealady, LOL at redirecting to a fax.

Does any of this help:

http://www.telstra.com.au/home-phone/features-services/

I've all but stopped my wall connected normal phone, and use the T-Hub 2 environment, and I've got a list of "crap telemarketers" as an actual contact  name with a few obvious numbers in the contact, so that if one of those gets through, the screen tells me, or my kids not to answer it.

I'm on the Do Not Call register, but I still get a few nuiscance calls.

Pity there aren't many more features, but I'm assuming VOIP technologies will allow us to more elegantly filter out calls. I have different ringtones for different groups on my mobile, so I know if it's work related or family or just general.

Hi Trisha,

You are unable to block incoming international calls. Number redirection can be set up if you know the specific number calling. If the calls you receiving are spam, you can view steps on how to restrict these calls at: http://goo.gl/z2ZfI6

Re: Block international incoming calls

Much of the above is contrary to what Telstra told me near end of last year.  I rang in total frustration to see if they could stop those annoying calls.  I was told they could put a block on incoming overseas calls, and that my dial tone would be different.  It is, but - touch wood - I've not had a call centre call since.  The woman also gave me instructions to remove the block if I wanted to (which I've since mislaid) and said if I did that then wanted it on again I'd need to ring Telstra again.   SO - was that info all crap?

Edited to add - the block is supposed to be on ALL incoming international calls, which is why I can take it off if I need to.  Which at the moment is ok, my foreign friends have my mobile no.

Re: Block international incoming calls

More mis-information from poorly trained Telstra staff!  Unwelcome incoming calls from overseas can be blocked by using the Call Forward Selected Callers facility, unless the calls are being made from VOIP services.

Call Telstra Unwelcome Calls on 1800 805 996 to get this facility set up.

If the offshore consultants don't know how to do this, insist on talking to a consultant in Australia, yes there are still a few here.

Re: Block international incoming calls

What a crock, The current software WILL allow Telstra to block international call just as they can block outgoing international or National calls for that matter.

The problem is purely a "Policy" problem and there is no incentive for the Telstra Monopoly to allow the blocking of international calls for a number of reasons that I will let everyone decide themselves. Let me just say that certain call options that are part of lets say OPTUS clients service and free are charged by Telstra at somewhat exorbitant rates.

There are a lot of areas that Telstra either denies other providers access to exchanges or has outright embargo on whole suburbs in deals done with developers. A classic example of the latter is North Lakes in Brisbane. No access to any provider not alligned to the Telstra network, this includes significant black spots for mobile coverage apart from the Telstra network.

Maybe one day we will eventually get a true competitive tellecommunications market in Australia, I won't be holding my breath.

End of rant, I wll get off my soap box and get ready for my next call from Telstra or Mircrosoft to tell me of all the problems I have with my computer............................

Re: Block international incoming calls

Hi jg11

We can't block an individual number sorry - however if you don't receive calls from overseas we can block incoming International calls instead.

Alternatively, we have the Telstra Call Guardian phone that might be useful for you, as it allows you to block calls from specific numbers.
Fordetailed info about this phone, we've got the User Guide here: https://www.telstra.com.au/content/dam/tcom/personal/home-phone/pdf/Telstra-Call-Guardian-301-user-g...

And if you're interested in the phone, it's available for $72 from our website: https://www.telstra.com.au/home-phone/handsets#features

HI Richard34

Welcome To Telstra.

Firstly, I do need to let you know that I have edited your post to remove all contact details to protect your Privacy.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to place a bar on a service for incoming International Calls.  We do have the Australian Government Do Not Call Register, which you can register for, https://www.donotcall.gov.au/ however as these calls are initiated outside Australian waters, they would not need to comply with our Australian Legislation.

We also have an Unwelcome Calls Team Unwelcome Calls... who may be able to assist you with stopping these calls.

Kind Regards

Hi jorlea01

Sorry can you just confirm what you're referring to?

If it's the Do Not Call Register - it's available to all consumer customers, it doesn't matter what type of phone line you use.

Re: Block international incoming calls

I just spoke with Telstra "Unwelcome Calls Team".

They CAN block calls to our landline from specific countries.

They set up blocks for 6 specific countries including India, Nigeria, Malaysia and 3 others where 90% of calls come from.

Other international calls will not be blocked.

Best of all they did it for free.

I'll let you know how it goes after a few days.

I got 4 calls from Indian solar panel telemarketers yesterday. They're driving me mad.

What a god send. I hope it works.

I am on the Do Not Call Register but that doesn't stop the overseas callers.

HI Mgb2, the details at https://www.telstra.com.au/support/category/mobiles-tablets/user-guides-help/call-barring-and-unwelc... don't specify that calls from international numbers can be blocked but the Unwelcome Calls team can advise further.

Re: Block international incoming calls

Surely the simplest way is to free-install Message Bank and perhaps use an introduction saying Please leave your name and message or you will not be called back or no message at all; this is the best redirection I have and it is so simple for me to dial in to Message Bank and hit the delete button for all the unknown or suspicious numbers.

Other than that, as I have said prior to this post, I use *92# to activate the blocking of international calls  incoming to landline, and #94# to free up the landline  at safe times.  Suspicious numbers I find in Message Bank before deletion, I  type in to the Tablet number blocking option. My old Nokia 6120 has built in operations that I can set for a variety of purposes to defeat the unwanted caller from overseas, or elsewhere, problems. I never get a call on that old mobile from overseas or local scammers.

Probably numbers I block in the android tablet dont allow message bank to forward them either, I am guessing by the vast reduction in messages that used to reach that linked tablet.   So many of our things are fully linked, which is very convenient, so we must take our best action to avoid making it at all easy to be interfered with. I also do not have any  internet set up nor bank details on my mobile or android and only conduct online secure banking on the desktop pc. Better safe than sorry.

I had the horror experience of once watching all my bank savings go out in differing large amounts from my main bank account a few years ago until a debt was racked up(in the red) . All ended well but without me finding out how it happened.

Maybe the above will help someone or many someones. I sincerely hope so.  I am always doing all I can to track online where these numbers may originate from, but I only use secure sites. And the knowing is really not important so much as the doing for yourself.

Re: Block international incoming calls

block *92# unblock #92# I checked as Telstra already had done it and used the hashes one first and back came the original dial tone; then I re set it to blocking and the tone became long and single one again so it is set.
