NBN - Landline not working

HI, We have just been connected to the NBN, but the phone now wont work, when I plug the connection in, it gives a dialtone for about 8 seconds then moves to an "engaged" beep. no calls are coming in, (goes to message bank) and cant dial out, although if you connect and dial straight away it goes through the motions of calling but then the line just seems to go "dead" with a slight crackle on the line.
