Hello How old is it please? When did it work last? Do you have the manual to confirm you are using it correctly? Is it in warranty or just out of warranty.. Did it come from a Telstra store?

I'm not a Telstra employee. 50 + years exp. in radio comms., eg mobile phones since 1963, two-way radios, base stations, antennas & pagers. Expert in current Telstra Go repeaters & smart antennas. "Being 75 years of age, entitles one to be an expert at everything!!"
it is also possible that you have a Telstra Messagebank service active on the account which will override the answering machine on the Uniden. Give billing a tingle and they can check this for you. Alternatively you may be able to check MyAccount/24x7 App to see if there is a messagebank service associated with the landline number
