The phone needs to be connected to the modem either by DECT or the socket.
If you want to use another socket in your house, you would need to get an electrician to rewire it so that you could have it plugged in to the modem via a patch panel.
Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.
