Excess Data Usage - 4GX / Netgear LB2120 Modem

I'm hoping someone can provide advice here... I have an issue (reported it to Telstra already) using a NetGear LB2120 4G modem in bridge mode... with nothing connected, it uses a set amount of data (117MB) every 4 minutes or so, almost to the second... I have read on a Netgear forum that this is an issue and no resolution... see link.. https://community.netgear.com/t5/Mobile-Routers-Hotspots-Modems/excessive-data-download-download-wit... I've been into the Telstra store and spoke to the tech guys as well as the commercial people, they advise that this model modem (LB2120) is a sTelstra supported version, yet this issue exists.... Seems odd that its not known, but others are experiencing this, based upon the link above... Any ideas or comments would be grateful. Steve

Re: Excess Data Usage - 4GX / Netgear LB2120 Modem

Hi mallinss,

Thanks for using crowd support. It would be best to change your WiFi password and reset your modem. Then test if this continues without any other devices connected. The usage that is being recorded is normally due to something being connected and using the data and not an error. By changing your WiFi password and resetting your modem, this will ensure nothing else is using the connection. You will then be able to see if the data is still showing the same amount used per 4min.

Let us know if this fixes the issue.

Re: Excess Data Usage - 4GX / Netgear LB2120 Modem

HI lain_T

There is no WIFI, the modem is in bridge mode, or services in this device are disabled based upon the bridge function....there are no devices connected to this during the tests, as the LAN / WAN ports are not connected to my internal devices....

This seems to be a known issue with this device and Telstra Mobile Broadband service.... this behaviour does not occur when I was using Optus and the only difference between the configs is the SIM and the APN....

Re: Excess Data Usage - 4GX / Netgear LB2120 Modem

Iain_T,

I am having the same issue, and from what I can see in other forums it is common.

I refused to participate in the NBN tragedy, so while I am waiting for 5G to be rolled out I bought a Netgear LB2120 4G/LTE modem and signed up to Telstra 100GB large data sim using the modems bridge feature.

Because it was a new thing I wanted to monitor the data usage in the Modem's user interface screen. On the second day of being connected I logged in to find it had chewed up 33GB, naturally I was gob smacked because that's 1/3 of my monthly data allowance in 1 day. You can sit there watching the live data counter ticking over approx 10mb/10sec and the only way to stop it is to reboot the modem and the data usage stops idle like it should. I kept checking it daily when I got home from work, some days it was normal usage, but other days it would increase by 10-20GB without any device usage. So half way through the month it magically stacked on 60GB in a day which put me at 150GB in 2 weeks and this also reduced my speed down to a snails pace of 1.5mb/sec which I am furious about because it's not what I signed up for, I am not getting what I paid for, and it's not my fault that Netgear/Telstra have a compatibility problem to cause this data consumption. I just had a look now and my data consumption is at 230GB and I still have 6 days to go, and at a speed much slower than my old wired connection.

Please don't think we are stupid by saying it is a device chewing through 230GB of data in 3 weeks because it most certainly isn't. The first thing I did when I saw it live chewing data was to log into my router and check for foreign wifi devices connected, and there wasn't any. For many years my household has used between 40-80GB per month on a wired Broadband connection. I am using the same router/switch, the same devices and we have the same daily internet activity. The only thing that's changed is the Telstra 4G connection and I am suffering because of this.

Iain, could you please take you customer's reported complaints seriously and have this issue corrected, because if this can't be sorted out then I will be dumping Telstra's service and I will head over to Optus. I have read where other people experiencing the same problem have stated this data usage issue of the Telstra sim in the LB2120 modem does not happen with Optus.

Thanks.

Re: Excess Data Usage - 4GX / Netgear LB2120 Modem

Hey onyamatey,

I can appreciate your concerns with the data that is being consumed when using this Mobile Broadband device and apologise for any inconvenience this has caused Smiley Sad This will have to be investigated further and I would recommend having this raised as an official complaint via our secure form at

  https://tel.st/ys47g

This will allow us to have a specialised case manager assigned to have the usage investigated and resolved further for you.

Let us know if you have any issues with this being raised further.

Re: Excess Data Usage - 4GX / Netgear LB2120 Modem

Ryan, sorry for the late reply. Gmail kindly filed the email notification into spam and I've just found it..

At the time of making my earlier comment I changed the LB2120 LTE modem from Bridge Mode to DHCP but since doing this I've lost the ability to log into the user interface screen to check data usage. I read on another forum that changing the LTE modem to DHCP would stop the excess data usage, but it's created other network connectivity/IP issues that I can't resolve. Some of my network devices will not connect (Laser Printer, Scanner, CCTV DVR, Wife's Kindle e-reader). Ideally I would like to return the modem back to bridge mode and let the wifi router assign ip addresses but this isn't going to happen with the ongoing data usage problem.

I will complete the online help form and hopefully someone can resolve this. Would it help to include the sim card phone number so it's activity can be analysed?
