Exessive 4G data usage

Answered

My brother is on a Telstra 4G 1gb mobile plan. He only uses the internet to check emails and visit a handful of web pages each month so 1gb should be more than enough, however he often gets a usage alert (50%) the first time he uses it each month. I have checked there are no other devices using his connection and I have turned off automatic updates on his laptop and made sure there are no programs automatically starting that could be using data.

Just last weekend he was only online for a few minutes to check his email and I can see today the following usage was recorded.

Sun 09 Apr 2017 09:12 AM105MBIncluded
Sun 09 Apr 2017 09:12 AM0.1MB-
Sat 08 Apr 2017 01:32 PM58MBIncluded
Sat 08 Apr 2017 01:32 PM<0.1MB-

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

emails with heavy content like pictures or large attachements.

what are the web pages?

for instance

using facebook via browser with rich content ie pics and vids could burn it up

ebay is a rich/heavy website

maybe the usage meter is up the cracker try checking the usage meter in the MyAccount section of his account. If the computer is a win10 computer turn on Data Sense and see how much each program is using... set its limit to 900mgs (this allows for a 100mg discrepency between the computer and telstra's usage meters.

Telstra customer 15+ yrs, I am not a Telstra employee and never have been

Kudos and thanks welcomed

Re: Exessive 4G data usage

Thanks for your quick response cretsiah.

The usage I posted is from the MyAccount section of his account.

He has no social media accounts and never watches video online and the emails he gets rarely have attachments and those that do are usually only 1-3 page pdf's. I checked his email account and he only had one email with an attachment and that was 858kb. Generally the only websites he visits are for online banking.

His laptop is running Widows 10. I will be visiting him this weekend so will turn on Data Sense as suggested.

with win10 you may want to go through all the settings and turn a few things off.

no im not talking about updates this is another part of win10 that has background talk back to base type stuff ie like sending info on usage, being part of the improvement program, what apps can access what parts of the computer.
