The reason Telstra charge more than other networks for some products is because they market their services as the premium product in the market.
The reason they increased data limits for home adsl and cable services is generally supposed to be in response to other ISPs who do not meter some of the major new movie download services,
Why does mobile internet cost so much. Simple. Mobile infrastructure is many times more expensive to install and operate than cabled services eg adsl and cable. In addition, each cell site can only handle a limited amount of traffic eg voice and data. Even to take some of the extraordinarily increased data capacity from the mobile network, it is an educated assumption that was the reason behind Telstra Air WiFi.
So, in summary, mobile transmitted services are multiple times more expensive to install, operate and maintain than in-ground fixed services. The last thing any mobile operator wants is to use up all their mobile capacity as not only is it extremely expensive to acquire sites, build new cell sites, pay rent for roof tops, and the myriad of equipment costs, the limited radio spectrum needs to be preserved, as it is a finite resource.
Hope that answers your question. No, I do NOT work for Telstra!
Previously worked with a Telstra Partner however I am not a Telstra Employee, just a fellow customer helping when I can.
