Pre-paid broadband: use of other providers

Answered

Hi everyone

Does anyone know if it is possible for a pre-paid broadband device to (temporarily) select a different local network operator (e.g. if the signal strength for Telstra is low)? If yes, how much are the data costs for doing so?

Thanks in advance

Cindy

Re: Pre-paid broadband: use of other providers

Hi cyrat,

The only agreements that Telstra have are the ones for International Roaming which provide access to other providers networks billed through us.

We don't have any agreements to allow non International Roaming on other networks.

Hi cyrat,

It isn't possible to select a different provider sorry :-(

To do so you'd need a different SIM Card, and would have to pay to have your device unlocked.

Re: Pre-paid broadband: use of other providers

Hi Steph

Thanks for the reply. Is this because it's a pre-paid SIM? Or did you mean a different SIM from the other provider(s)? This isn't a standard device, it's a purpose built broadband device used for research purposes, so we have control over every setting except for those related to the network provider.

Cheers

Re: Pre-paid broadband: use of other providers

Hi cyrat,

Every device that accesses the mobile network has a SIM, regardless if it is a mobile, tablet, or Mobile Broadband USB or WiFi modem.

The SIM is specific to each network provider, and therefore impossible for another network to be used with a different providers SIM.

Re: Pre-paid broadband: use of other providers

Dear Ivan,

Thank you, I understand that every (most) mobile device has a SIM. My query is essentially this: is it possible to do non-international roaming to access other local networks using a prepaid SIM? In other words, are there any corporate agreements between the providers which allow me to do so, even if the costs would be predictably higher.

From your replies I would deduce it is not standard/practically possible (due to a lack of corporate agreement between the operators), even though it is technically possible.

Cheers
