I have just renewed my BYO contract and have found out in the fine print that family data sharing is no longer available. Not happy Telstra what a backward step!

Just found this out today as well... bought a new tablet on a 2gb plan, expecting it to share the 20gb from my phone because this has been a standard feature for the last 4 years, but no luck. Options are a bonus 5gb of data for my tablet, or a $1000 cancellation fee..... sneaky dogs, removing a feature like this on the sly.
experiencing the same issue. this really sucks.. the plans available arent really competitive and the lack of stickiness this change brings will drive customers away as plans are up for renew.
I realised the same thing today. Absolutely a deal breaker for me.
As it was within the 10day cooling off period I can cancel the contract without incurring the fee.

Its interesting.. i was rejected when i attempted to apply cooling off period. I was on the My Account page and was prompted to recontract.. this was not considered Telstra soliciting a sell. Fortunately I was able to negotiate a satisfactory outcome and I remain with Telstra, for the moment.
I went to upgrade my 4 services but found out too no more data sharing. So walked out empty handed and not happy. Won’t be recontracting with Telstra after being a customer for 15 years.
Yes I'm looking at switching all my services over to a provider that offer shared data. I already pay over $300 a month with telstra for 2 ipads and 2 iphones. I wont be upgrading with telstra that's for sure. Just waiting for our contracts to end then it will be see you later.
Sorry to hear that, TKRoberts. Since you're contemplating disconnecting, please call us on 13 22 00, and say, 'Disconnect' at the voice prompt.
You'll go through to our specialised disconnections team, who will do anything they can to resolve the issue and keep you as a customer.
If not, they'll smooth the transition to a new provider.
(They're open from 8am - 9.30pm AEST Monday-Saturday and 8am - 8:00pm AEST Sunday)

Unfortunately, because of where I am, the only option that I have for mobile connectivity is Telstra, because I would gladly leave them over this. It's a dishonest money grab.
If you do not re-contract, but stay on your current plan even after your current plan end date, does your family share data continue?
The real reason for Telstra cancelling data sharing is revenue, nothing else.
I pay $129 lease for my main phone because it takes a pounding in business. For that reason I signed up for a Nighthawk mobile router to use with my surface and tablet to avoid putting more load on my phone battery. $5 SIM, 122GB of data, perfect.
I recently dared to upgrade to an S10+, you can upgrade 3 times per year on lease assure, with 160GB data, thinking that the data would be shared. It is only 5 months since I signed up for leasing so surely nothing significant would have changed? Nope, data share cancelled means my mobile router is useless and I am back to hotspotting my new phone, which now means even the mighty 4,100mah S10+ battery won't last a day.
Complained to Telstra, my fault for upgrading apparently.
Well Telstra my $400/month of business is moving as soon as I can and I will never come back.
Standard stuff for how Telstra treats its customers.
the fact that people are still raising the same issue 6 months latter and the big T has done nothing to improve their message suggests either arrogance or knowledge that the message is unpalatable and its best dealt with in the footer.
Like everyone else here, I initially was upset about the loss of Data Sharing.
It was clearly advertised as being removed from private plans though and it was not hidden or done slyly.
Small Business plans, which are the same price as the old Personal plans anyway, do have data sharing still available.
You have a choice. A Small Business plan with Data Sharing, or the Peace of Mind Data on personal.
I use a lot of data on my phone, so for me having the Peace of Mind data with no excess usage costs outways the loss of Data Sharing.
Vodafone have also gone down this route now of offering an "unlimited" data, that is just restricted to 1.5mbps when you reach the quota limit instead of charging at $10 per Gbyte.
I find the 1.5mbps pretty good for even most youtube streaming that I would do, so the Peace of Mind works for me.
Optus may still have Data Sharing, though I have not looked deeply into Optus as I have had major problems with their data network being slow and also they do not yet offer the Peace of Mind data options.
Telstra did not remove Data Sharing if you were on one of their Data Sharing plans already, it was only for the new plans.
Always remember to read what you are getting. Plans often do change every few months.
I want to note, that although I appear like I am defending Telstra in this regard, I am in no way affiliated with Telstra and will argue with them when the do dodgy stuff. I have a current issue outstanding, so I am by no means a Telstra fan boy.
So sad to see this feature gone and yes you pay more.
What I do for data is "hotspot" wifi sharing. So ipad connects to phone that has the data package.
The only problem is that the ipad polls data seemingly alot more. Hence data usage goes up alot.
