Family data sharing no longer available

I have just renewed my BYO contract and have found out in the fine print that family data sharing is no longer available.  Not happy Telstra what a backward step!

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you

Re: Family data sharing no longer available

Just found this out today as well... bought a new tablet on a 2gb plan, expecting it to share the 20gb from my phone because this has been a standard feature for the last 4 years, but no luck.  Options are a bonus 5gb of data for my tablet, or a $1000 cancellation fee..... sneaky dogs, removing a feature like this on the sly.

It went in July. As plans change quite often, you should always make sure what you are signing up for before you commit.

New in market plans that was launch last July is highlighting getting unlimited data. Thus data sharing was removed.

experiencing the same issue.  this really sucks..  the plans available arent really competitive and the lack of stickiness this change brings will drive customers away as plans are up for renew.

Re: Family data sharing no longer available

I just got told that the data sharing is no longer available so now instead of paying $5 a month for the iPad and getting 80gb of data to use I now I get 2gb of data because it’s no longer shared with the phone data. No if I want 25gb of data for the tablet I have to pay $60 on top of the money I’m already paying for two phone plans that between them have 240gb of data

I had the same issue, was really annoyed as i have other phones & tablets already on the data sharing plan, now i have all my family except me on data sharing... Great Work Telstra.

It's certainly a retrograde decision. It's a pity you did not make yourself aware of the details of your changed plan.

Re: Family data sharing no longer available

the recontract process is really poor with regard the degrading of feature. from personal experience I was on the my account page and was encouraged to recontract. during the recontracting there was little mention of this significant change (small print in CIS). strongly believe Telstra should do more to announce this change.. especially when they are soliciting a recontract, its a feature that is (was) important and competitors are still offering such a feature.

Like everyone else here. Found out today if I recontract for a Note 9 it won’t be sharing data with my two other Telstra devices. So my only option is to leave Telstra after 18 years as customer.

I realised the same thing today. Absolutely a deal breaker for me.

As it was within the 10day cooling off period I can cancel the contract without incurring the fee.

Its interesting.. i was rejected when i attempted to apply cooling off period.  I was on the My Account page and was prompted to recontract..  this was not considered Telstra soliciting a sell.  Fortunately I was able to negotiate a satisfactory outcome and I remain with Telstra, for the moment.

Re: Family data sharing no longer available

You say that like it is logical coupling of events, rather than a blatant rip-off by Telstra. Introducing (speed limited) unlimited data plans should have no bearing on the rest of us with fixed data allowance plans who want to use family data sharing. By all means, make the two mutually exclusive, but one doesn't negate the usefulness of the other.

I went to upgrade my 4 services but found out too no more data sharing. So walked out empty handed and not happy. Won’t be recontracting with Telstra after being a customer for 15 years.

Yes I'm looking at switching all my services over to a provider that offer shared data. I already pay over $300 a month with telstra for 2 ipads and 2 iphones. I wont be upgrading with telstra that's for sure. Just waiting for our contracts to end then it will be see you later.

I'm really annoyed about this and intend to jump ship to Optus at the end of my plan.
Telstra, get with the program, people have other devices and want to utilise their data on them - and why not? Why are you making it impossible? Greed. You want me to have to buy another monthly data plan when i don't use the data i've already paid for.

If you do not re-contract, but stay on your current plan even after your current plan end date, does your family share data continue?

Hi GregW,

Yes, your share data will continue as long as you don't re-contract or change plans.

A relative of mine is doing this now so they can keep the shared data feature.

Re: Family data sharing no longer available

Where I live Telstra service is very patchy and no inside reception so with no shared data, making a phone without an aerial connection a hotspot is not an option which makes data with phone useless. Shared data that we have now works well with aerial on roof and mobile wifi modem. I am considering other options for data and will go satellite I reckon. What a backward step Telstra. The only solution Iv'e found is that Apple now offers 24 months interest free on all their products. I'm purchasing all my new devices this way while keeping my shared data through Telstra which is 89GB.

It may be an idea to speak to the Coverage department who may discuss a Telstra Go repeater and antenna system. (About $1600)

Telstra is a disgrace to take away this feature. Nothing but a pure money grab from a dishonest company that has little regard for its customers. As you can tell by all the comments, our feet will do the talking at plans end.

Re: Family data sharing no longer available

The real reason for Telstra cancelling data sharing is revenue, nothing else.

I pay $129 lease for my main phone because it takes a pounding in business. For that reason I signed up for a Nighthawk mobile router to use with my surface and tablet to avoid putting more load on my phone battery. $5 SIM, 122GB of data, perfect.

I recently dared to upgrade to an S10+, you can upgrade 3 times per year on lease assure, with 160GB data, thinking that the data would be shared. It is only 5 months since I signed up for leasing so surely nothing significant would have changed? Nope, data share cancelled means my mobile router is useless and I am back to hotspotting my new phone, which now means even the mighty 4,100mah S10+ battery won't last a day.
Complained to Telstra, my fault for upgrading apparently.
Well Telstra my $400/month of business is moving as soon as I can and I will never come back.

Re: Family data sharing no longer available

They really don't care about it. I am a $400/month customer and they just blamed me for daring to upgrade.
Telstra hid the information in 1 non-descript sentence on the CIS. Doesn't even mention the service name 'Family data sharing', it merely says you will not be able to share the data.
According to my company lawyer, that does not represent a positive notification of Telstra ending and active service. Considering my options.

Re: Family data sharing no longer available

Did your lawyer also tell you that you should read and understand the terms and conditions before signing up to an agreement?

Technically Telstra didn't end anything, you signed up to a new agreement that came with its own terms and conditions. It was not a continuation of your existing agreement.

I'd be getting a new corporate lawyer, sounds like I'd have a field day in commercial negotiations with them.

Re: Family data sharing no longer available

sorry i do not see it on the main page. I find it is a greyed font in a pop up which is sourced by navigating from a 'what is peace of mind data'. I simply do not believe telstra has done enough to inform customers on current plans to the changes within the new plans. I think we should agree to disagree.

Re: Family data sharing no longer available

Like everyone else here, I initially was upset about the loss of Data Sharing.

It was clearly advertised as being removed from private plans though and it was not hidden or done slyly.

Small Business plans, which are the same price as the old Personal plans anyway, do have data sharing still available.

You have a choice.  A Small Business plan with Data Sharing, or the Peace of Mind Data on personal.

I use a lot of data on my phone, so for me having the Peace of Mind data with no excess usage costs outways the loss of Data Sharing.

Vodafone have also gone down this route now of offering an "unlimited" data, that is just restricted to 1.5mbps when you reach the quota limit instead of charging at $10 per Gbyte.

I find the 1.5mbps pretty good for even most youtube streaming that I would do, so the Peace of Mind works for me.

Optus may still have Data Sharing, though I have not looked deeply into Optus as I have had major problems with their data network being slow and also they do not yet offer the Peace of Mind data options.

Telstra did not remove Data Sharing if you were on one of their Data Sharing plans already, it was only for the new plans.

Always remember to read what you are getting.  Plans often do change every few months.

I want to note, that although I appear like I am defending Telstra in this regard, I am in no way affiliated with Telstra and will argue with them when the do dodgy stuff.  I have a current issue outstanding, so I am by no means a Telstra fan boy.

When I was looking for a new Telstra plan, I actually found the information that Data Sharing was removed really easily and it took me less than 2 minutes.
It took longer reading the CIS for the new plan than it took to find that Unlimited Data options replaced Data Sharing.
Makes sense. Why would you cripple your business by Data Sharing unlimited data.....

So sad to see this feature gone and yes you pay more.

What I do for data is "hotspot" wifi sharing. So ipad connects to phone that has the data package.

The only problem is that the ipad polls data seemingly alot more. Hence data usage goes up alot.
