I bought a phone on a two year telstra contract, but the phone broke. If I buy a new unlocked handset and put my old sim card in, will I continue to be billed for calls and data usage the same way as with my old phone? Will telstra know I am using a different phone handset?

Yes. Your post-paid Telstra Mobile plan will remain exactly as it was when you signed the contract, with the same terms and conditions, and usage charged at the same rates.

It would, if it cares to look… but it does not care which handset you use.
