How to Enable 4G Voice Calling on Your Mobile Phone

Is my mobile phone able to make and receive phones calls in a 4G only coverage area?
If your mobile device is listed below (Compatible Devices), you are able to make and receive phone calls on your mobile phone while in a 4G only coverage area, provided that 4G voice calling is enabled on your phone and you purchased your phone from Telstra. Instructions on how to enable 4G voice calling are set out below.

  • Apple iPhone 6 onwards, Apple Watch 3 onwards
  • Samsung Galaxy devices, S7 onwards, Note 5 onwards, A5 onwards
  • Google Pixel devices
  • LG devices G5 onwards
  • Telstra Signature Premium & Enhanced devices
  • Sony devices Xperia Z5 onwards

If you did not purchase your mobile phone from Telstra you will need to seek technical assistance (see details below) to determine if you are able to enable 4G calling on your Compatible Device.

My device isn’t listed as a Compatible Device – what does that mean?

If your mobile phone is not included in the list of Compatible Devices (above), this means you may not be able to make or receive phone calls (including emergency calls) on your mobile phone while you are in a 4G only coverage area because your device does not support 4G voice calling.

What is 4G voice calling?

4G voice calling (also known as VoLTE or HD Calling) allows customers to use Telstra’s 4G service (including while in a 4G only area) to make and receive phone calls on compatible mobile phones using Telstra’s 4G network. The calls are sent over a data (4G) network rather than a voice (3G) network. Learn about what to expect from 4G voice calling.

How do I enable 4G voice calling on my mobile phone?

For non-Apple Compatible Devices:

Ensure your mobile phone’s operating system is up to date. Once it is up-to-date, 4G voice calling will typically be enabled on your device within 4 hours.

Refer to your user manual, seek technical assistance (see below) or try our Mobiles & Tablets discussion boards if you need help on how to ensure your phone’s operating system is up to date.

For Apple Compatible Devices:

Step 1 – Ensure your mobile phones operating system is updated to the latest iOS version. To do this:

  • Tap: Settings > General > Software Update, then follow the instructions displayed to complete any outstanding Software Updates

Step 2 – Ensure you have the latest carrier build enabled. To do this:

  • Tap Settings > General > About > Service Provider, and check that it is at least Telstra 35.0. If an update is available, you'll see an option to update your Service Provider settings.

Step 3 – Ensure VoLTE (4G voice calling) is turned on. To do this:

  • Tap: Settings > Mobile > Mobile Data Options > Enable 4G > Ensure ‘Voice & Data’ is ticked. If not, you can activate it by tapping on “Voice & Data”

4G voice calling will typically be activated on your mobile phone within 4 hours of the completion of steps 1 to 3 above.
