Telstra is progressively deploying 4G Small Cells to help connect communities in regional Australia to our mobile network.
4G Small Cells can be deployed faster than traditional mobile sites and, in regional Australia, our 4G Small Cell technology is a cost effective means to deliver 4G coverage to areas where coverage is minimal or nonexistent.
4G Small Cells only provide 4G services however, they do not provide 3G services.
This means only some types of mobile phones are capable of making and receiving phone calls while in a 4G only service area. Many phones, particularly older mobile phones, rely on 3G services to be able to make and receive phone calls.
Is my mobile phone able to make and receive phones calls in a 4G Small Cell area?
If your mobile device is listed here, you are able to make and receive phone calls on your device while in a 4G Small Cell area, provided HD Calling is enabled on your phone. Please go to Q3 and Q4 to find out more about HD Calling and how to enable it.
If your mobile device is not listed here, this means you will not be able to make or receive phone calls on your device while you are in a 4G Small Cell area. You will not be able to make emergency (triple zero) calls from your mobile phone while you are in a 4G Small Cell area.
What is HD Calling?
HD Calling allows customers to use Telstra’s 4G service (including while in a 4G Small Cell area) to make and receive phone calls on compatible devices. Please click here to learn about what to expect from HD Calling.
Is my mobile service compatible if I have the following Business products: Call Select, Call Manager and/or Mobile VPN?
Telstra HD Calling, Telstra Video Calling, Telstra WiFi Calling & Telstra Messaging are not compatible with these services.
How do I enable HD Calling on my mobile phone?
For non-Apple compatible mobile phones:
Ensure your phone’s operating system is up to date.
For compatible Apple (iPhone) mobile phones:
Ensure your operating system is updated to the latest iOS version.
Ensure you have the latest Telstra carrier profile:
Tap: Settings > General > About
If an update is available, you'll see an option to update your carrier settings. Please click here for more information about updating your carrier settings.
Ensure VoLTE is turned on:
Tap: Settings > Mobile > Mobile Data Options > Enable 4G > Voice & Data
HD Calling will be activated on your handset normally within 4 hours of completion of steps 1 to 3 set out above.
