Extending range on Telstra Smart Modem 2.0 with Wavlink AC1200

I have a Telstra Smart Modem 2.0 which I received recently when I connected to the NBN. I am trying to extend its wifi range using a Wavlink AC 1200 Aerial X range extender. I seem to have connected the 2 successfully, and can see the extended network on my phone where I need it (showing full strength signal), but when I enter the password I get the message on my phone "No internet connection". I'd be grateful if someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong and how to fix it. Thanks in advance
