How to Setup Smart Modem Gen 2 with existing CG3100D cable modem

Answered

I have an existing cable setup with the CG3100D modem. Telstra recently sent me a Smart Modem Gen2 due to continual drop outs due to NBN work in the area.

I have set up the 2 modems connecting the WAN ports on both devices but the SmartModem does not connect to the old cable model (no green light).

My old modem is set in NAT mode with DHCP and a custom IP Address 192.168.1.1

My smartmodem is also set for DHCP and I have tried changing the LAN IP to 192.168.1.2 in an attempt to get the 2 connecting but no luck.

Does the old modem need to be in bridge mode to make this work? Anyone have good instructions how to get the old and the new working together?

Re: How to Setup Smart Modem Gen 2 with existing CG3100D cable modem

You need to connect WAN port of Smart modem to a LAN port on the CG3100D and you should get internet access on Smart modem.

It would be better if the CG3100D was in Bridge mode. In Bridge mode you want have two NATs that can create problems with some devices and apps.

I Bridge mode will still be able to access modems GUI.

If you do Bridge CG3100D turn off WiFi before bridging.

That's it!  Put the CG3100D into Bridge mode, connected Smart Modem WAN port to GC3100D LAN port and internet access restored.

Thanks!
