Telstra Gateway Frontier DJN2130 Unofficial Document

Due to lack of official manual for the Telstra Gateway Frontier DJN2130 I have written my own. I don't work for Telstra and I am not an IT professional   so I can't guarantee the accuracy of the document.

The document took less than a week to produce so I don't understand why Telstra does not produce its own manuals.

The document covers the following:

Lights and Buttons
2. Gateway Connections
3. Login and Home Screen
4. Change Gateway’s Login Password
5. Telstra’s Internet User Name and Password
6. Parental_Control
7. Connecting Wi-Fi devices
8. Address Reservation (Static LAN I P Address)
9. Port Forwarding
10. Inbuilt Help
11. Firewall
12. Reset Gateway
13. Turn WI-FI OFF or ON
14. Bridge Mode and Converting WAN port to LAN port
15. Dynamic DNS
16. Register and De-register a DECT handset
17. Telephony (Information, Phone Book and Call Log)
18. R emote W EB Access
19. Wi-Fi MAC Filtering
20.Management (Add extra Gateway Logins)
21. Change Wi-Fi SSID and Password
22. Third Party VDSL Modem /Router
23. DLNA Server and Mass Storage
24. Traffic_Monitor
25. 3G/4G Backup
26. Diagnostics (Fault Finding)
27. Change IP Address of Gateway
28. Gateway Firmware / Software
29. Gateway’s Time Settings
30. Specifications
31. Known Limitations and Bugs

Re: Telstra Gateway Frontier DJN2130 Unofficial Document

Well done @cf4 :-)

God, have we needed that. It needs to be linked officially somewhere on Telstra's website for those wanting to, or purchasing that modem. I've lost count of the number of posts I have seen on the internet requesting that very thing.

Telstra should offer you a freebie of some sorts for the hours used to put all that together. That is literally going to help 1000's

Thank you so much! :-)

Re: Telstra Gateway Frontier DJN2130 Unofficial Document

Hey @cf4 on page 25 you talk about the 3G/4G Backup.

I am just wondering do you know what the signal quality strengths are?

I'm not sure how many levels there are. Mines showing as 'weak', but I think 'poor' is under that one and I think the highest is 'superb'.

Re: Telstra Gateway Frontier DJN2130 Unofficial Document

I found the following information at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2473085

I will include the information in the document.

I think a RSSI of

-50 to -75 dbm is Green (Great)

-76 to -90 dbm is Orange (Good)

-50 to -75 dbm is Red (Limited Access)

Anything less than -101 dbm the light is off

GSM & 3G networks (RSSI)
The 3G signal level is identified by a measure called RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) and is measured in dBm. RSSI is a measure of the available signal plus the noise in band. A level of -50dBm is a perfect signal and at -110dBm (usually earlier) you’ll lose the 3G connection.

• -50dBm to -75 dBm – High Signal (good voice and data)
• -76dBm to -90 dBm – Medium Signal (good voice and data)
• -91dBm to -100 dBm – Poor Signal (good voice data, marginal data with drop-outs)
• -101dBm to -109 dBm – Very poor Signal ( voice may be OK, no data)
• -110dBm to -113 dBm – No signal

4G/LTE (RSRP)
LTE signal strength is measured in RSRP (Reference Signal Received Power). The 4G RSRP signal level measure is as a 'rule of thumb' around -20dBm lower than the 3G RSSI measure, such that 100dBm (RSSI) would equate to around -120dbm (RSRP). RSRP is a more accurate measure of signal strength than RSSI, as it excludes noise and interference on the network. It measures just the usable portion of the signal. Although the 4G RSRP signals appear lower, it does not mean your signal level is worse.

• -70dBm to -90dBm is a strong signal with fast data speeds. Stronger signals are possible.
• -91dBm to -105dBm is a good signal with fast data speeds
• -106dBm to -112dBm is fair but useful and fast and reliable data speeds may be attained
• -113dBm to -125dBm reliable data, but performance may be slower and latency increased
• -126dBm to -136dBm performance will drop dramatically
• -136dBm to -140dBm disconnection

Perhaps  @Feanharowould know what the signal strengths are in relation to the backup light.

@cf4@Ozmoz

This is the values Hybrid gateways use:

Good = Green

OK = Amber

Poor = Red

@cf4 @Feanharo

Very interesting guys thanks. I now have a better idea :-)

Mines orange after running an indoor antenna. I don't think I'll get any better than that unless I put one outside.

Luckily my Bigpond NBN is very reliable so barring any unforseen issues I shouldn't need it.

Hi @Ozmoz

Given that the download/upload speeds are capped at 6/1mbps, I suspect that orange will hit that fine

Re: Telstra Gateway Frontier DJN2130 Unofficial Document

Great document, Thanks for writing it!

Could I suggest you update section 25 and change the antenna recommendation to either internal or external, and never use AUTO. I have just resolved an issue with my backup. When there is poor 4g signal strength, the router was hunting between internal and external antennae, and so it would not settle on the internal antenna long enough to actually engage the backup.
[ I have also ordered a pair of LTE antennae, and will then change my setting to EXTERNAL].

We have very unreliable ADSL, and so the auto failover to backup feature of the DJN2130 is excellent for our situation.
Telstra staffs' knowledge of this product and how it works seems extremely limited.

You are not the first person to have this problem with backup when selected to auto see link below.

I don't know why they don't either.
I had a bit of trouble getting a manual for the T797Gnv3. It can be quite confusing. It is sometimes branded as a Netgear, a Thomson, or a Technicolor modem.

Yeah the 797 came out around the time Thompson was re-branding to Technicolor so it tended to be interchangeable.

I have a new 'Telstra Smart Modem' which appears to be the same thing as the 'Gateway Frontier'.  Your document will be of great assistance.  Many thanks.
