Did you use a capital T for Telstra? If that doesn't work then password has been changed and will need to reset modem. If Gen 2 Smart modem reset button is on back near LAN port one. On the other recent modems it is located below power button. Press for at least 10 seconds while modem is powered on. Modem should reboot reseting all settings to factory defaults.
This topic surprisingly comes up frequently and it may be due to the mysterious nature of the Telstra Smart Modem you have. I am not sure if this is an intentional design aspect, an undocumented feature or program entry that has since been changed in Firmware on more up to date models or if it is more prevalent for people who connect to their Modem using Wi-Fi instead of LAN cable.
This is what I found on the Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 Arcadyan Firmware Version 0.05.04r; current version is 0.07.05r - label underneath modem http://mymodem, User ID = admin, Password = Telstra; 192.168.0.1 can also be used instead of http://mymodem.
Using a PC with Wi-Fi access, when you connect, the welcome screen is prefilled with the default with 'admin' and 'Telstra' but you are not aware of Telstra being prefilled as there appear to be more than seven dots. Just select the Red Sign In and you are connected to a Live Network Map with all the Settings Icons at the top of the Page.
If you wish to assign a personal password (User Settings Icon), it appears 'admin' is fixed and only the default password can be changed. It requires you to enter 'Telstra' as your Old Password as part of the new password registration. After you assign a personal Password to the Modem, when you go back to the Home Screen for Log-In, the Admin ID and Password Fields will be blank, requiring you to enter 'admin' and your new personal password.
You may wish to undertake a Factory Reset for troubleshooting reasons under the Management Icon menu sometime in the future. This action wipes any personal Modem Log-in password previously set up and also re-institutes the default SSID/Password back on to the Modem if you had changed those as well. After completion, whilst being connected via Wi-Fi, if you try to reconnect to 192.168.0.1 you will be presented with a 'Unable to Connect' error in your Browser as you have lost Wi-Fi connection after Factory Reset. You need to register back on to your Modem's SSID/Password first, then open up the browser and enter 192.168.0.1 to get back into the Modem. Once again , just select the Red Sign-In and you will be connected. Hope this helps.
PS: It would a good reference for future readers, if enquiry posts included Modem Model Numbers and Firmware Versions related to this topic and also how others have cracked the mystery of Log-In on their respective units as it may have changed from my experience.
Just an update on this. Helped a friend out yesterday by updating his Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 by Technicolor to Firmware Version 18.1.C-0347-950 RA. This now shows a Booster Wi-Fi Tab in the Home screen to validate introduction of Telstra Booster Gen 2 Easy Mesh support by Technicolor in this firmware version (Arcadyan Smart Modem Gen 2 also supports Easy Mesh as they make Telstra's Wi-Fi Boosters; both the Gen 2 and the earlier Gen 1 Discs). The link takes you to a Telstra Web Page for further information - assume it would become active when you purchase and connect a Booster.
Also, you have to enter password 'Telstra' into the Welcome Status Screen if you want to get into System Administration Menus.
