nighthawk m1 returned from Telstra still faulty

A friend had a nighthawk m1 returned from Telstra saying device all ok. I bought a data sim online for the device and got a message saying the sim was active. The device won't connect to internet and shows "detecting service" (common fault if you google it). Put the sim into an iPhone and it takes you to a Telstra activation website that doesn't respond. Numerous calls to 13 22 00 and promises of higher level tech call back that never happens - no solution. Latest supposed firmware found but fails. Conclusion - device is crap and so is customer service.
