Lead in cable responsibility

A quick question about copper lead in cables between a house and the street.

The scenerio: A brand new house that has a phone socket inside it, a grey box I believe called a Madison box on the outside wall and what appears to be Telstra copper cabling on the overhead pole in the street. There is definitely a buried conduit pipe going between the Madison box and the overhead pole. I'm 100% sure there is NO lead in cable in the conduit.

The requested service: A Telstra home phone and ADSL bundle. No other parties (eg Internode or TPG) are involved.

The question: Given the above scenario and the requested service, who is responsible for installing and covering the cost of a lead in cable if indeed there is not one currently there and one needs to be installed? The mixed messages I have seen so far on this topic is a disgraceful situation in 2018.

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Re: Lead in cable responsibility

Assuming that they copper cable can be run through the existing conduit to the house, then the following applies.

You place an order for a new service with the provider of your choice, they then organize the connection to be done (through Telstra for POTS, NBN Co for NBN).

You are then charged for the connection to be made (each provider has a new connection fee that is passed on to you through your first bill).

Re: Lead in cable responsibility

Interesting. One of the Telstra reps I spoke to told me that a contractor would be needed to put the cable in and I would have to pay for it.

Re: Lead in cable responsibility

That is only the case if the conduit between the house and the boundary of your property is unuseable.

Re: Lead in cable responsibility

Yeah that's what I thought. Will the technician who I have coming to get this whole thing up and running put the lead in cable in themselves or does someone else have to do it?

Re: Lead in cable responsibility

As long as the job has been entered into the system correctly, the technician should run and connect the cable. Then your phone line will get activated. Then about 7 to 10 days later, your ADSL will be activated (that part doesn't get done at the same time as the initial connection normally).

Re: Lead in cable responsibility

Yes,

I have been told by techs that my phone line is currently sitting on a pole down the road, across the street and that a specialist team is needed to get it to the front of my house and into the telstra box. I haven't yet been given a date for when this will happen.

I got this email last night, so I presume things are progressing???

If you can help me out by looking up where this whole thing is at (because the order tracker is not working), that would be great.
