Oh, that was when they decommissioned the older version of 3G in 2012. The Next G is 3.5G, at this stage, there hasn't been any announcement regarding it be decommissioned from any official information that I have seen. 3G phones capable of using the 850Mhz band will work with NextG.
Next G is still 3G. When Telstra shifted to next G they switched off most of the 2100 MHz base stations and used only the 850 MHz base stations. This meant that 3G phones that only supported 2100MHz and 900 MHz (Used by Optus) would only work in a few isolated areas.
