Not Registered to Network

I'm gonna leave out complaints about how difficult this site is to use in terms of finding where to ask a question.....

I recently had an accidnet with my phone, and have had to revert to an old phone (I *think* it's a 'Galaxy Express', but not certain).  
Yesterday I was receiving falls, but couldn't get a data connection.  I added an APN (according to detail I found online for Telstra), and sure enough, now my data works.  But suddenly (and I assume it's related) people can't ring me, and when I try to ring out I get a message "not connected to network"....

Any ideas?  (I get it's an old phone and technology has moved on, but it owuld be nice if I could get calls AND use the internet)....
