Pre paid iPad charges when in NZ

Answered

We have a 12 Gig $180 recharge on an iPad and went to NZ not really expecting it to connect.  it did and chewed up the entire amount in 2 days flat Didn't download 1 gig let alone 12 so what are we being charged? The Telstra app only refers to a rate for Oz only with no info on overseas charges. What is going on?

Re: Pre paid iPad charges when in NZ

Your pre paid device will connect to a 3g or 4g network automatically when overseas.

International roaming is expensive - 1.5c per kB ($15.36 per MB). That would mean that just 12 mb can chew up $180. Next time you go overseas please get a International roaming data pack. You can also change settings on your Ipad so that it does not connect to 3g when overseas Or else just remove the Sim, This would mean you can still use hotspots and wi fi when overseas but wont connect to 3G.

Re: Pre paid iPad charges when in NZ

Hi Malcolm & welcome to CrowdSupport.

While outside of Australia, data is charged at the Pay As You Go rate of 1.5c per kB ($15.36 per MB). This can be found on our Pre-Paid Mobile Broadband Rates page. To get around this rate we do offer International Roaming Browse Plus Packs that provide an amount of data to use while overseas.

To purchase a Browse Plus Pack all you need to do is:

Click on the My Account icon in the Connection Manager, select Plus Packs and click on the International Roaming Browse Plus Pack you wish to purchase.

The pack cost will be deducted from your Telstra Pre-Paid Balance and you'll receive confirmation of your purchase. You can check your balance via the My Account icon in the connection manager.

Cheers,

You may also wish to go to Settings->Mobile Data and turn Data Roaming to 'Off'.

This is ALWAYS a good idea with any iDevice before travelling, unless you are aware of and accept the painfully high costs of roaming.
