Can't send mails to Bigpond addresses when emails contain company website address

Hi,

A client suddenly can no longer send emails to any Bigpond addresses (anyone else is fine - have checked that they are not blacklisted anywhere). After investigation, we found that if we removed their web site url from their signature, it will send to Bigpond just fine.

We tested by substituting their company web address (www.company1.com.au) with some other company web address (www.company2.com.au) retaining all other parts of the signature exactly the same, and the emails will send to Bigpond just fine. We also created test emails - very simple, as follows :-

Hi,

This is a test.

Regards,

Someone

Email : someone@company1.com.au

Web : www.company1.com.au

And this will fail. Substitute www.company1.com.au with www.company2.com.au and the email will go just fine.

Who can we contact in Bigpond to get this sorted out ?

Thanks.

CK

Re: Can't send mails to Bigpond addresses when emails contain company website address

Hi CK,

Is the original company web address using a shortened URL.

Emails sent to or from BigPond accounts, may be blocked if they contain links using certain URL shorteners and affected emails will be rejected and receive a bounceback message.

You can find more information about this on the following page:

Re: Can't send mails to Bigpond addresses when emails contain company website address

Hi Ben,

No, they are specifying their fully qualified domain name, eg. www.company1.com.au

I have also tested their web site address and domain name against the Spamhaus DBL and neither one is listed as blocked.

Still getting bounces with this in the bounce messages if their website address is included in the email  :-

552 5.2.0  Suspected spam message rejected. IB703

Regards,

CK.

Re: Can't send mails to Bigpond addresses when emails contain company website address

Can I PM someone with the client's web address and have this looked into in detail (rather than post it on a publicly visible forum) ?

Thanks.

Re: Can't send mails to Bigpond addresses when emails contain company website address

Hi CK,

The error message IB703 means that the domain is listed in the Spamhaus DBL which is why it is being rejected.  This needs to be taken up with Spamhaus.

Re: Can't send mails to Bigpond addresses when emails contain company website address

Hi Ben,

As mentioned previously, I have already done a lookup at Spamhaus DBL and the domain name is not listed :-

Blocklist Lookup Results

company1.com.au is not listed in the DBL

Blocklist Lookup Results

www.company1.com.au is not listed in the DBL

(again, company name changed for the purpose of this post).

Re: Can't send mails to Bigpond addresses when emails contain company website address

Further, we know the IP address of the mail server is not blacklisted becasue by merely changing the website address in the email signature, the mail will successfully be delivered to Bigpond. But to be complete, we tested the IP address against Spamhaus, MXToolbox and whole lot of others and the IP address is definitely not blacklisted.

Spamhaus DBL's website says if their lookup tool says a domain is not list, IT IS NOT LISTED. To quote :-

"Not Listed.  If the IP address or domain you are checking does not show as listed in the results above, then it is not currently in any Spamhaus blocklist."

And from their FAQ :-

"Read the bounce ('DSN') messages carefully; they should provide clues as to why your mail was rejected. Unfortunately, some of them are not accurate or helpful; sometimes they even point to Spamhaus SBL for no reason at all."

Re: Can't send mails to Bigpond addresses when emails contain company website address

Hi Qsoftsys,

The issue is clearly to do with the domain of the link included in the body of the email. This will be blocked by spamhaus [http://www.spamhaus.org/dbl/] and Telstra BigPond are unable to intercede on your behalf.

Re: Can't send mails to Bigpond addresses when emails contain company website address

Hi Shelly,

You claim that the domain is blocked by Spamhaus' DBL yet the Spamhaus DBL lookup tool clearly says it is not which is inconsistent with your claim. Given that there is no way to contact Spamhaus (have you had a look at their site ?) and since the use of any and all DBLs and RBLs are purely voluntary, this is actually Bigpond's responsibility to work out why these emails are not getting through as Bigpond voluntarily chose to use Spamhaus. Perhaps there is a fault in your lookup code, resulting in false positives, who knows ? Simply dismissing the issue as "not our problem" does not fix the problem.

Again, I stress, lookup at Spamhaus says the domain is not blocked.

Checking against every RBL, DNSBL, etc. that I know of all says the domain and IP address are in the clear.

Only Bigpond insists the domain is blocked. NO OTHER SERVICE PROVIDER IS BLOCKING THIS DOMAIN and I'll bet many of them also use Spamhaus as a blacklist database.

Please look further.

Re: Can't send mails to Bigpond addresses when emails contain company website address

Exactly same issues. We introduced company signature (exclaimed signature software on exchange). No black list with email or URLs but alas we are blocked. We have also implemented SPF DNS records for our mail server and are clean as a whistle.... Most perturbing.

The bounce back says we are spam due to some string of characters in the email. But if I search for this string in the original outbound msg the string is not found???!

Where to from here?

Hi Shelly_Telstra.

Can you provide any further information with this issue as I have one client that is getting a bounce back for every 12 emails sent getting 1 bounce back with this error as the return message.

Thanks Shelly_Telstra,

Yes I have done all those checks before posting.

This issue is that the customer is sending to 12 Telstra address's and she then get's one bounce back with the rejected message.

All emails get through to destinations except for this one address.
