Message content rejected due to suspected spam. OB703 [Err code: 558]

Had this problem on Webmail the past month.  All emails blocked, starting with attachments and then spreading to mail without attachments.  Mail was sent from the mobile phone for a while, now all mail is blocked from there as well.  Tried to work it out through Spamhaus without success and no luck with SMIP authentication.

 

Is Telstra working on this problem?  Your message board has not been helpful.  It's all to complicated for this layman.

We understand that some customers may be encountering error code 558 when attempting to send emails via Telstra Mail Webmail service. The following tips should help you resolve this issue in most instances;

 

- ensure that your message subject is meaningful (more than 1 word)

- ensure that the message body has content, especially if there is an attachment

- check if your IP address is blacklisted in Spamhaus https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Telstra-and-or-BigPond-Email-KB/Why-is-my-email-being-blackli... (note that if the blacklisting occurred due to a virus or spamlike behaviour it will very quickly be relisted)

 

Mobile devices are more likely to encounter this error code as you connect to the network via a shared IP and your reputation score for spam assessment can be affected by other customers on that same IP. If you are using a mobile device or the above tips do not resolve the error being encountered we strongly recommend configuring an email application on your device. We recommend using IMAP as it will sync changes with the server so you can access your email on multiple devices. Emails stored in all folders will also be sync’d.

Fairly sure that Telstra does not have a clue how to Fix this problem they have created. The are lots of posts referring to the problem with no answers. Their support staff have no training in the fix. They promise to ring and do not. looks like we will have to find another provider. Telstra service is in a **bleep** spiral.

Thanks Shelly, I had tried subject line etc suggestions to no avail but your link  https://www.telstra.com.au/support/category/email/telstra-mail/set-up-telstra-mail-on-your-device  sorted the problem. It is a bit of a process but both my android phones (Huawei G8) are working as they should. Thanks for your help. Please deseminate the above link to your call centre staff as their first response is to search of local Telsra outage problems which is a waste of time and frustrating as it is not addressing the problem. I am aware that ther have been many wide spread as well as very localised outages, (we have had many this year) but your call centre will not focus on the problem at hand. I can only assume they need training in the Err code 558 issue. Once again thanks for providing the solution to a very frustrating issue.

Shelly - something seems not quite right about Teltstra forcing its customers to use Webmail, it failing, and then the customer having to try and fix the problem for themselves. I, like 100's of others, have had this issue since 8 November. The link you give here for desktop mac does not seem to exist so I am no further forward..

 

I have complained via your online complaints forum but my attempts to contact my resolution manager have reulted in - guess what? - him not being there and not phoning me back. I'm beginning to despair of Telstra fixing my problem. Surely you don't want your customers to walk away in disgust? Why don't you communicate properly with everyone instead of us having to search online and through crowdsupport for a fix, admit the error and help solve it properly. Send out a flyer with the bills - or something constructive!

 

At least I hope to receive the credit I have been promised for the non-service.

Hi Luscious88 I can advise that Telstra in no way forces anyone to use Webmail. The email service is available to Telstra post-paid broadband members, but of course members are more than welcome to use any email service they choose. As the mailbox is free, included with your home broadband connection there is no credit for those periods where you may not have access to the mailbox. 

 

Regarding your complaint, what was your SR 1-xxxx compaint reference number there, and we'll be happy to follow up with them for you but please note, case managers are generally not available on weekends or public holidays, they will also not be able to resolve a network issue on our end, on an individual basis. I apologise for any confusion or inconvenience.

Part of that information is wrong Cas-Ra.

 

I have a post-paid broadband service.

My (associated) webmail service has not been useable due to this Err 558 since October. 

 

I contacted billing king and told them this.

They gave me a full credit for the whole period where I could not use the service.

 

They acknowledged it as a Telstra problem.

 

Is it too much to ask that Telstra have a consistent and consolidated approach to this widespread problem??

It is certainly not helpful when you give customers wrong information.

Trevor11 is right. And I also have been promised a credit which I will be very disappointed not to receive.

 

Your comments re Webmail are confusing. How come I received emails from Telstra saying that Webmail was coming, how exciting and great it would be, counting down to the day, instructions to set it up - all as if it was mandatory, and no indication whatsoever that there was an alternative. In fact my old Mail no longer worked. So I think a reasonable person's conclusion would be to assume that there was no option but to use it.

Hi Luscious88,

 

You can access your Telstra Mail via web mail, through an email client such as Outlook or on a mobile device. We have guides here  on how to set this up on different platforms.

I am having this issue just with emails that have attachements? I am no techie and I need info in user friendly terms please?

How big are the attachments?

 

Is there any text in the subject and body of the email?

I have this problem and all indications and searches show that this is a Telstra problem.

I have tried the Telstra recommended ideas with no luck. Tried some of the broader blog ideas and will see if works. 

Started a few days ago. Virus checks including the suggested Norton bot checks. All good. As it seems to be all users of Telstra webmail, I expect some positive result to assist in fixing. Thanks.

@BarryJS - Have you tried configuring an email program or mail app with your BigPond login details? Doing so it part of my response on Dec 23.

Shelly, I did the IP address reset that said I was a a spam IP address so cleared the IP address. That worked.

Of course I was not spamming and had no virus or bot as per symantec/norton. Thanks

I've tried all the options you have suggested and i still have the same problem of not being able to send email for days at a time.

 

When will Telstra fix this issue?

 

The way this is going Telstra are going to cost me the oppertunity to successfully apply for a home loan as I cant meet the required deadlines for providing the required information due to your non-functional email.

@reluctantcustom are you receiving this error when sending via an email program or webmail?

 

If you are getting this error when sending via an email program, your issue will not be related to the problem outlined in this thread and you should check if your IP address is blacklisted in Spamhaus https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Telstra-and-or-BigPond-Email-KB/Why-is-my-email-being-blackli... (note that if the blacklisting occurred due to a virus or spamlike behaviour it will very quickly be relisted if the virus has not been removed)

 

If you need to urgently send an email, I would suggest that you utilise any of the free mailboxes that are available such as Gmail and Outlook.com.

Telstra rang me yesterday to say there is no resolution and they are working on it (well I think that was what they said it's a bit hard to understand sometimes).  I haven't been able to send emails from webmail for 2 months. I'm not expecting any resolution.  I'm using outlook but am changing to gmail as Telstra so helpfully suggest!  I've totally given up on this.
