Important information about Freedom Plus™ Pre-Paid plan

This article is to provide important information about the plan inclusions to customers currently on Freedom Plus. 

What’s included

When you recharge you’ll get recharge credit that you can use for calls and text in Australia and overseas. You may also get bonuses like Data, Talk, Text and Telstra Text to use while you stay on your offer. More detail about what’s included in your bonuses is listed in the below table.


What’s not included

Your bonuses can’t be used for some things like use overseas, talk/text to satellite numbers, premium numbers (eg 19xx numbers), operator assisted calls (eg most 12xx numbers), content charges, or diverted calls.


What are my call, text and data inclusions on Freedom Plus? 


What are the Calls, SMS and MMS charges in Australia?

These are the main charges used to calculate your usage:

National calls – 39¢ connection fee and 89¢ per 60 seconds or part.

A 2-minute standard national mobile call costs $2.17 (incl. connection fee)

National MMS – 50¢ per message sent per recipient in Australia.


What data charges can I expect?

You use mobile data when you access email, mobile internet and apps on your handset. To understand how much data you might need visit telstra.com.au/prepaid-data-calculator

If the offer you’ve selected doesn’t include bonus data, or you have used up all the bonus data on your offer, data will be charged at the Bonus data rate of $2 per MB in Australia.

PAYG data is not available on Telstra Pre-Paid Freedom Plus™.

How does data roll over work?

If you recharge before the credit expiry date, any unused data from your current recharge will be rolled over to the new expiry date.


Unused data rolls over to the next recharge only (i.e. a further 28 days). Any data that has already rolled over from a previous recharge will not roll over again.

How do I call and text friends and family overseas with Telstra Freedom Plus™?

You’ll receive international call credit when you recharge, $30 or more on Freedom Plus. You can use this international call credit to call countries overseas at standard international calling rates. See our rate calculator to find out more.


Calls to international numbers – View call rates

MMS to international numbers – 75¢ per message sent per recipient.

SMS to international numbers – 35¢ per message sent per recipient.


What happens if I don’t use all of my included international call credit?

If you recharge before your credit expiry date, any unused international call credit from your current recharge will roll over to the new expiry date.

Can I purchase Google Play content using my credit?
Customers on Telstra Pre-Paid Freedom Plus are able to purchase content from the Google Play store using Recharge Credit.

How is Freedom Plus different to Pre-Paid Plus?

The main differences are:

  1. Pre-Paid Plus includes unlimited standard calls to 10 selected destinations on $40+ recharges (rather than the International Call and Text credit included on Freedom Plus).
  2. Pre-Paid Plus $30+ recharges do not come with recharge credit but include “Plus Credit” ($5, $10 and $15 with $30, $40 and $50 recharges respectively). Plus Credit can be used on international calls and text, roaming and Premium SMS. Plus Credit excludes calls, text and MMS to Australian numbers, diversions, MessageBank® retrieval, internet browsing within Australia and Google Play Content purchases.
  3. If you activate on, or switch to, Telstra Pre-Paid Plus, you won’t be able to use credit to buy content from Google Play. If you stay on Telstra Pre-Paid Freedom Plus, you’ll still be able to use Recharge Credit to buy content from the Google Play. 

Can I stay on my current offer if I prefer?
Yes, you can remain on your current offer. If you switch to Telstra Pre-Paid Plus™, you will not be able to switch back to Freedom Plus as it is no longer available for new customers. You can switch to one of our other current offers including Telstra Pre-Paid Beyond Talk®, Telstra Pre-Paid Simplicity® and Telstra Pre-Paid Long Life.

@TommyR - "All new and existing customers who recharge or activate on Telstra Pre-Paid Plus are eligible for Night Data until 24 October 2016."

I think you may wish to update that info. At the moment the end date is 8th May 2017 (hopefully extended).


Also the Freedom Plus info says Night Data will also roll over, but it hasn't included Night Data since Prepaid Plus launched.

I have followed up for the confirmation on the correct dates. The correct date is 8 May 2017 which I have now updated in the article.

To my knowledge and upon checking resources, the Night Data information is correct, if you know of any official Telstra pages showing differently, please advise and I will follow up further.

The issue is that there is no Night Data on Freedom Plus - which this post is about. Therefore no night data can be rolled over, and it may cause some confusion if folks read it and ask where is their night data.


Night data went EOL on Freedom Plus as soon as Prepaid Plus was launched - as a nice carrot/stick to move off it.
