T-Voice 503 deactivate voicemail

I'm asking this question on behalf of my mother and father who are in their 80's and just had a 503 supplied with the rollout of the NBN. They don't have a computer and find it hard to understand technical stuff when talking to Telstra. Their original phone is still there and Telstra replaced the 2nd cordless phone in their bedroom with a 503. Since this happened voicemail on the original phone doesn't work and can only be accessed on the 503. The manual doesn't say how to turn off the voicemail on the 503 - I'm thinking that if this were done the voicemail on the first phone would work again?

Does the original phone have its own answering machine? If so then disabling voicemail would do it
