I use Thrunderbird for email. Was working fine yesterday and nothing has changed that I know of but I can no longer send mail (receiving mail still works fine). Sending with the same email ID works fine with web mail.
The error is "Login to server mail.bigpond.com failed."
Server settings for sending are:
Server Name: mail.bigpond.com
Port 25
Authentication method Password, transmitted insecurely
Connection Security None
Thanks!
Morning Dyeman, there have been a few changes in reccent times and ongoing with email settings and Telstra.
Try the following and see if this gets things up and running;
Incoming Server Settings:
POP Server: pop3.live.com
Security: This server requires a secure connection (SSL Encryption)
Port: Port 995
Outgoing Server Settings
SMTP Server: smtp.live.com
Security: This server requires a secure connection – STARTTLS/TLS (recommended) or SSL Encryption depending on the mail client you’re using
Port: Port 587
Tick the box indicating outgoing server requires authentication or SMTP authentication for security (in most email clients, this is not selected by default).
Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) with the POP and SMTP connections. If your client allows the use of TLS Encryption, choose this instead.
If there’s an option on your email client which says ‘Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)’, make sure that this box is un-ticked.

Thanks Jeff,
I tried changing incoming mail settings first - basically changed POP server from mail.bigpond.com to pop3.live.com. Other settings unchanged (Port 995, SSL/TLS security). When I tried to fetch mail, Thunderbird prompted me for a password. I tried the same pasword that I use for mail.bigpond.com but pop3.live.com responded:
Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server pop3.live.com responded: authentication failed
I remember now that I ad a similar problem a month or two ago, and the diagnosis seemed to be that password rules had changed on the POP server for sending mail. I did change my Bigpond password for my email ID (I think the new rule was that the password needed to contain at least one special character such as an underscore).
Sending mail doesn't work either - after prompting me for the password for smtp.live.com it fails with error message "Login to server smtp.live.com failed."
David
OK, take a look at the following link, it has a range of settings and NB: Port 456 or 25 are NOT recommended for sending.

Thanks Geoff,
I think I have worked it out (at least have found something that works). The user ID I was using to send mail was the email associated with an old Bigpond wireless broadband service that is no longer active, i.e. it is now just an extra email ID rather than the primary email ID associated with a Bigpond service. When I changed the Outgoing server settings to smtp.live.com and also changed the user ID for Send to a different user id (that is the primary ID for a current Bigpond service) mail sending now works. Why the old ID decided to stop working last night I have no idea.
No doubt more good luck than good management, but at least it is working now (for the moment at least..)
Thanks or your help.
David
