Extra Data

What is Extra Data?

Extra Data is the easy way to get more data when you need it. It replaces previous excess data usage rates and Data Packs. 

When Extra Data is active on your eligible post-paid mobile plan and you go over your monthly data allowance, we’ll automatically apply a 1GB $10 block of Extra Data. 


How much is a block of Extra Data?

Extra Data blocks are $10 per block and any unused data will expire at the end of your monthly billing period. 


How does Extra Data work on a personal plan?

If you go over your monthly data allowance, a 1GB $10 block of Extra Data will be automatically applied to your plan. And if you use up that 1GB block before the end of your billing period, we’ll automatically add further 1GB $10 blocks of Extra Data. At the end of the billing period, you’ll return to your normal monthly data allowance. Extra Data is only available for use in Australia. 


What about data sharing plans?

For any of your plans that support data sharing, we’ll add a single 1GB block of Extra Data to your shared data allowance instead of adding individual data blocks to each service. Extra Data blocks can be used by all eligible data sharing devices on the same account. 


If you have one of our Data Share plans, Extra Data will be automatically applied to your account (unless you decide to opt out). Blocks of Extra Data will be available to use by all services on the Data Share plan.


When can I start using Extra Data?

You can now switch all your existing eligible services to Extra Data. If you take up a new Go Mobile plan, Business Go Mobile plan, Go Mobile Broadband plan or Business Go Mobile Broadband plan Extra Data is already included on your service. If you make changes to your existing business plan from 12 May 2015 you’ll automatically be switched to Extra Data. 


How do I activate Extra Data?

Activating Extra Data is simple.

You can use My Account:

  1. Register or log-in to My Account
    2. Select your service
    3. Go to the Data usage page
    4. Select Activate.

Or use the Telstra 24x7 app to activate Extra Data:


  1. Download or open the Telstra 24x7 app on your smartphone
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Select Activate.

What will happen to Data Packs?

If you have a Data Pack, you can keep it or remove it, you just can’t change it or add it again once it’s been removed. You may find that Extra Data gives you more data for your dollar and gives you easier access to additional data. Due to the responsive nature of the Extra Data, it also means you don't have to pay for the data pack every month, meaning that if you have a month where you use less data, you aren't paying for the data pack you aren't using, instead only paying for the Extra Data Blocks that you need.
