Constant Spam

I have recently switched my mobile from Optus to Telstra, keeping the same number.

Within literally 2 days of moving service, I have been inundated with spam calls and messages.

Whilst I used to used to receive the occassional autocall call recorded message, I am now receiving up to 10 phishing messages and over 5 spam calls a day, compared to 1 or 2 a month.

Whilst obvious and no I haven't clicked on anything or given my number out, and given I have the exact same mobile number I have for years, all I can put this down to is either Optus are much better at preventing these coming through, which I doubt, or my number has either been made public or been sold by Telstra (staff) on the black market.

For apparently being Australia's top, if you take the price being paid as an indicator anyway, provider; I am frustrated to say the least.

Would be very interested in what is being done to fix this clearly rampant issue.

My wife who also moved, has had the exact same thing occur.

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Re: Constant Spam

If you have changed providers and retained the same numbers, it seems suspicious but I am not sure spam calls like that can be filtered out as you think unless the initiating number is a known spammer/nuisance call source. Any spam call calls from 'spoofed' numbers wouldn't be detected in most cases..

I have had a couple of my numbers with three different providers before moving them to Telstra, I didn't seen an increase in spam calls coinciding with the porting processes, but I have noticed a number of those sorts of calls in the last week or so, which I haven't received before.

Re: Constant Spam

Hi Bob, while I can't explain the increase since changing providers, I can advise there is a very new scam or phishing text scam that is sending multiple messages per day to customers. You can learn more about this scam here Getting Getting strange ‘missed call’ SMS messages? Here’s how to avoid the Flubot scam (https://tel...

Scam calls or activity can be reported here https://tel.st/2utrh4

Hi Sean,

I'm sorry but that system is a joke. It's a long tedious process to report each number and it doesn't stop these messages from coming.

Telstra should be implementing a spam filter before another provider does, 'cause I'm not paying the Telstra premium to receive spam every day.

In the USA, you can report SPAM texts by forwarding them to 7726 (SPAM) so that the carrier/telco can add it to their filter and block them being sent to customers.

You can report Unwelcome Calls (and text messages) to Telstra.

Re: Constant Spam

Again, it's another tedious process filling out a webform for each SMS you receive, which can be several per day. That form doesn't even inform the customer it can be used for SMS, which is another drop of the ball.

A service like the one I mentioned above would be much easier for customers to use and would be more effective at filtering out scams for everyone on Telstra's network.
