Failure to send SMS Tough Max 3

I have a Telstra (ZTE) Tough Max 3 phone and from time to time cannot send SMS messages to some of those in my contacts list.

I can receive from these persons, but when I try to reply, it fails to send.

At the same time, I can be enjoying conversations via SMS with others in my contacts list.

I have tried switching the phone on and off to reset it, but this doesn't help.
