I have an old Telstra locked mobile iphone that I want to replace. I intend to purchase an unlocked new android mobile phone and transfer the nano sim card.
- Will the new phone work ok (still using Telstra network)?
- Is it then just a matter of porting my number to another provider and replacing Telstra sim with a new sim card from the new provider?

The new phone should still work on the Telstra network. If it is a budget Android phone it might not support all the frequencies used by Telstra or VOLTE which is required for voice calls in Telstra areas.
When you port to another carrier it will just be a matter of switching SIMs.
If I was switching and buying a budget phone I would wait until ready to leave Telstra and buy a phone that is compatible with new provider.
