Prepaid Sim Activation

I purchased a new prepaid Sim in store (Telsra Bunbury) the person serving me installed the sim and said I was ready to go.  I didn't check the phone.  I got home (an hour drive from the store) only to find that the SOS only status is still showing....32 hours later and it still hasn't activated and is sayin SOS only.....why?  It was mean to be activated in store, with a new mobile number.  I wasn't told there would be a time lapse in purchasing the sim and being able to use the phone.
